Live Timing and Scoring

I enjoy following along qualifying and moto's via live timing. The delivery of times / sectors / laps etc on the broadcast is subpar or non existent. In the past our live timing option was pretty good. We could see last lap, best lap, sectors and time remaining. Everything I wanted to fill the void of what the broadcast missed. Everything was good in my nerdy race fan world. Then when SMX became a thing and branding took over the live timing went down the tubes.  I couldn't find a link to the old way and settled for the new thing with an eye on the horizon for something better.  Yesterday while lost in a twitter scroll I came across user "MotoPivot"

https://motopivot.com/live-timing

He uses AI to generate all kinds of data for each race day and is digging into archives pulling up old races of RC and MC. I don't know how long he's been doing this or if I'm way behind the curve but I felt the need to share.

Looking forward to REDBUDDDDD!

Thanks for the link.  The new live timing is absolutely terrible.  I hope this one works as good as it looks.

I don't know which live timing page you're using, but you can still see gap, difference, last lap, best lap, sectors and time remaining.

Hey! Thanks for the shout out.

I build www.motopivot.com, I am a software engineer and started this project during Covid to flex some data engineering techniques I was doing. I initially used the PDF scraping as a way to moneyball Steve's stupid fantasy game. I then decided to create a data model that could support the entire data set. Unfortunately getting the complete archive of results, including every lap, segment, moto, overall and point ever recorded is a massive effort that cuts across many sources. I've written thousands and thousands of lines of python to have parsing classes for every possible format of AMA PDFs.  To get the full set of every moto I'll have to comb through all the cycle news because even the vault only has overalls after a certain point in the 80s. This is non-trivial and has to be accurate or what is it worth you know?

My stated objective of the project is to create the most complete and accessible archive of moto results and folk lore in the world, even beyond results alone. Teams, sponsors, staff et al. I want it to be engaging and self-service. I have a lot of ideas I plan to execute on once I have the complete set. I'm trying to build a BI tool around moto data. There are others who have done a lot of this leg work, so I don't pretend to be special, but I'm trying to build something that I personally want to use for digging into and sharing results.

As far as live timing goes, I like Marx and others are just using their own data sources but adding a bit more of a sophisticated UI on top of it. I am for instance going to add a new gap to leader chart for Redbud which will visually show those numbers across the laps.

I'm parsing the 2025 results as they happen, here's 2025

450 Series Points:

For instance:
450 Moto 1

450 Moto 2

One feature people don't always notice, is you can select whatever riders you want at the bottom to compare peoples rides.
I am really looking forward to having the complete set because the options for career comparison stuff is kind of endless and fun.

Anyways, hope somebody finds some use in it.

I launched some improvements on Saturday.

- Gap to Leader Progression Chart
Race Cache Improvement
- I am now tracking the race server side and creating a cache of moto details
- When you join the race, I merge the cache into the client so you will not lose details while you were away
- When you background a tab for more than 30s, and come back, it resyncs
