High School Motocross

Edited Date/Time 1/27/2012 2:43pm
I realize that public school and motocross don't go hand in hand, but the thought of a high school motocross team has been running through my head quite a bit lately. Especially since my high school isn't really the greatest when it comes to athletics. I was just wondering if anyone has any stories/information about a high school motocross team both in the present or in the past?

we don't have a "team" but do have 11 riders racing out of one high school here in IL. 8 are racing Hare Scrambles and the other 3 mx.

not sure if that is a big deal.....but this town is only 7000 people.

Why not, if there is enough interest at your school then go for it. They have snowboarding/skiing clubs .in a lot of schools so why not a motocross/riders club?

I remember back in the late 1970's & early 80's High School Motocross was sort of a big deal.
Every year at Delta Park in Portland Oregon (PIR),they used to have a race.
My cousin won it one year on a RM 100. Smile

That's awesome. We have a couple that take it serious at mine, and some more that just ride.

I think it would be cool to do, it would just be hard to get support. Some people rag and hate on motocross around here, but they don't have a clue what it's like you know? It would be awesome to have a club like that. Not only like a club, but I think a race at a local track with kids from high school's competing would be a blast.

From what I remember back in the day...(I was pretty young so my memories are a big foggy about the event).

They would have a sanctioned race, where each High School within 50 miles around or so could enter like 3 riders. They would have qualifiers, then a main event.Mixed size bikes, just 1 class. They even gave a big trophy to the school that won.My cousins trophy was still in the school trophy case back in 1990 when I graduated High School and I think he won it in 1979.

From what I remember, I think they went by the top rider in the main and it wasn't scored as a team event.

Here is an old article about High School MX in Cali back in the day.
It even mentions Bauer. Smile

Man I use to want a highschool motocross team so damn bad. I pretty much gave up Basketball completely in 8th grade; about a year after I started racing. Gave up football too even though I was second string qb lol.
We would have had a pretty solid c class lol.
That is a good idea though goon I like the way you think. If school could pitch in and fund a little it would be good incentive for kids to stay in school. Shit I know for a fact I wouldnt have dropped out my senior year if I had somethin like that to look forward to. Only problem is that a lot of people in and around my area find bikes to be a nuisance. Ahh what do they know.

Back in my day (mid 70's) we had High School Mx in Orange County, Calif. If I remember right we had a few area qualifiers that would put you in the finals at the LA Colusieum during the Superbowl of Motocross. The main was held at half time between the pro races in front of 60,000 spectators. Talk about stage fright, I finished 9th after blowing the start on my rocketship FMF Penton. Marty Smith won and Mike Bell got 2nd, both had factory rides in high school. I think Warren Reid was in there too. It was a pretty damn cool event.

I come from a town of a population of 29,000 or so. Only 2 people race where i'm from. Armando Aguilar and myself, Armando has been winning REM in 250 Pro lately and well, I haven't done much yet, but were the 2 lone racers in Santa Paula.

I think a local race with kids would could happen for sure. Maybe have it somewhat like an MXdN format with only a few moto's to keep the day short, and to keep any non-moto fan who attendend occupied for a few hours. I've heard about those stories of the LA Coliseum, that is really awesome.
I've checked out that website about the High School thing and tryed to e-mail them but I don't think the page was working. If anyone has anymore contact information that would be great.
Ddavis, yeah I've rode with Aguilar before he's fast. I think our school would do pretty good, we have two guys who made LL this year that attend my high school and one of them finished 2nd tying for a title, so it would be fun.

well my school is very good with this motocross.. our school ends at 3:35 but my principle lets me get out at 2:04 everyday so i can go and ride. so i guess my school is okay with motocross being my sport.

Yea people rag on motocross and then you take them to a supercross or national and they are hooked.

On the school side, I'm afraid "liability" would rear its ugly head. Some schools might be more open and tolerant. You will have to feel them out and see how it is. If you are the kind of kid who races on Sunday and then stays home on Monday, don't expect a positive result. Be prepared, and if you can enlist the help of any other riders at school, do so.

If you have a local shop or track, you might want to talk to them and see if you can garner any support there. You will have to show them that there is something in it for them benefit-wise. Maybe start with a "local" day at a nearby track and get people to come out and spectate. Maybe you could get a local pizza shop to donate some pizzas or discount coupons. If you know a lot of people in town, you might even be able to get someone to put up the money for a few trophies or ribbons.

Good luck!

Goonslurkin if your where you say your from OWB, KY. Anything with two wheels and a motor is probably pretty damn important in your town. I dont see why they wouldn't already have some kind of two wheel team, street or dirt.

CRFracer, you would think that, but Nicky Hayden is somewhat big in our town, but if a high school softball champ. or whatever is playing, more people would want to know about that. Nascar's huge here but motocross hasn't really caught on, but it's getting there.

Liability might be an issue. BTW, on our school news show they reported that high school football was among the highest death rate in sports. Kind of made motocross not look so bad.

Thanks for the imput guys I might look into it. But mostly for speculation and just wondering about it.

GO RANCHO!!

Don't forget Jeff Ward.

I have a funny story about him trying to make me give up my gate pick at OCIR.

Blurry pic of me in my Rancho Alamitos racing jersey:

Type up your Wardy story sometime when you get a chance and post it in this thread.
Would love to hear it.

It was 1977.

Jeff Ward went to Bolsa High (I'm pretty sure it was Bolsa; Rick would know. Rick?), which was in my district.

At the high school races, they didn't always have full gates for every class, so they would double up sometimes.

At one race at OCIR, they lined up the 250 Novices (me) with the 125 experts (Wardy).

Well I went to the gate and got in my favorite spot and was getting my psych on, when I heard a bike revving up behind me.

I ignored it.

Next thing I know, there's a front wheel spinning next to my head.

I looked around, and it was Wardy. He was popping wheelies and yelling at me that I was in his spot.

I yelled back that it was first come first served, and I got here first.

He pulled the ol' "Do you know who I am?" routine, and I said, "Yes I do, and I'm pretty sure you're going to kick everyone's ass no matter where you line up."

He calmed down a little bit, lined up a few places to the left, and kicked everyone's ass.

Rick, you still here?

Remember the Silverstien brothers? Those boys could ride.

And Greg Sokol?

We had a pretty bad-ass team.

Scott Lockhart left tiny Springhill, Nova Scotia, wayyyy over here on Canada's east coast, and went to California to ride with a highschool MX team. That was somewhere around 1979 or 80. It was happening back then. As I remember it, it was a team based deal.

I love the idea of the top 2 riders from each highschool meeting at a highly publicized MXdN style event. Bring on the cheerleaders!!

Yeah Geeze, I'm here. I was a few years ahead of you I think, I raced in '74 and '75 I think?? I'm getting old, too many concussions, memory is pretty crappy.

great story about Wardy, I got one from OCIR too. So my old man calls up DG says his kid needs a ride for the high school MX qualifer at OCIR. Unbelievably they gave me a bike, it was actually the bike Danny Laporte was going to ride the next day at the Saddleback national, Maybe it was a Trans Am back then. Anyway Dan from DG brings the bike out to the race, I get almost no practice on the thing and line up for the first moto. It's the fastest thing I've ever been on, unreal fast for the time. I get out of the gate bad, hold it on around the start sweeper and do the biggest highside ever. Completly wad the bike, tank, fenders, shift shaft busted off and my bell is rung hard. Dan is all pissed off and tells me I have to go back to the shop with him (late at night) and if you remember the rumors about Dan I was like No F"N way I'm going back to the shop alone, finally convinced one of my buddies to go with me. I think we were there until 3am fixing that thing and I'm feeling the effects of a concussion the whole time, pretty miserable.

Your right we did have some good riders go through Rancho, Doug Silverstien, Greg Sokol, Richard Sciuto, Mark Tyer, Bob Madden, Mike Winters and you know Josh Grants dad Mike went to Rancho, Great times....
