I realize that public school and motocross don't go hand in hand, but the thought of a high school motocross team has been running through my head quite a bit lately. Especially since my high school isn't really the greatest when it comes to athletics. I was just wondering if anyone has any stories/information about a high school motocross team both in the present or in the past?
not sure if that is a big deal.....but this town is only 7000 people.
Every year at Delta Park in Portland Oregon (PIR),they used to have a race.
My cousin won it one year on a RM 100.
I think it would be cool to do, it would just be hard to get support. Some people rag and hate on motocross around here, but they don't have a clue what it's like you know? It would be awesome to have a club like that. Not only like a club, but I think a race at a local track with kids from high school's competing would be a blast.

They would have a sanctioned race, where each High School within 50 miles around or so could enter like 3 riders. They would have qualifiers, then a main event.Mixed size bikes, just 1 class. They even gave a big trophy to the school that won.My cousins trophy was still in the school trophy case back in 1990 when I graduated High School and I think he won it in 1979.
From what I remember, I think they went by the top rider in the main and it wasn't scored as a team event.
Here is an old article about High School MX in Cali back in the day.
It even mentions Bauer.

We would have had a pretty solid c class lol.
That is a good idea though goon I like the way you think. If school could pitch in and fund a little it would be good incentive for kids to stay in school. Shit I know for a fact I wouldnt have dropped out my senior year if I had somethin like that to look forward to. Only problem is that a lot of people in and around my area find bikes to be a nuisance. Ahh what do they know.
I've checked out that website about the High School thing and tryed to e-mail them but I don't think the page was working. If anyone has anymore contact information that would be great.
Ddavis, yeah I've rode with Aguilar before he's fast. I think our school would do pretty good, we have two guys who made LL this year that attend my high school and one of them finished 2nd tying for a title, so it would be fun.
If you have a local shop or track, you might want to talk to them and see if you can garner any support there. You will have to show them that there is something in it for them benefit-wise. Maybe start with a "local" day at a nearby track and get people to come out and spectate. Maybe you could get a local pizza shop to donate some pizzas or discount coupons. If you know a lot of people in town, you might even be able to get someone to put up the money for a few trophies or ribbons.
Good luck!
Liability might be an issue. BTW, on our school news show they reported that high school football was among the highest death rate in sports. Kind of made motocross not look so bad.
Thanks for the imput guys I might look into it. But mostly for speculation and just wondering about it.
Pit Row
Don't forget Jeff Ward.
I have a funny story about him trying to make me give up my gate pick at OCIR.
Blurry pic of me in my Rancho Alamitos racing jersey:
Would love to hear it.
Jeff Ward went to Bolsa High (I'm pretty sure it was Bolsa; Rick would know. Rick?), which was in my district.
At the high school races, they didn't always have full gates for every class, so they would double up sometimes.
At one race at OCIR, they lined up the 250 Novices (me) with the 125 experts (Wardy).
Well I went to the gate and got in my favorite spot and was getting my psych on, when I heard a bike revving up behind me.
I ignored it.
Next thing I know, there's a front wheel spinning next to my head.
I looked around, and it was Wardy. He was popping wheelies and yelling at me that I was in his spot.
I yelled back that it was first come first served, and I got here first.
He pulled the ol' "Do you know who I am?" routine, and I said, "Yes I do, and I'm pretty sure you're going to kick everyone's ass no matter where you line up."
He calmed down a little bit, lined up a few places to the left, and kicked everyone's ass.
Rick, you still here?
Remember the Silverstien brothers? Those boys could ride.
And Greg Sokol?
We had a pretty bad-ass team.
I love the idea of the top 2 riders from each highschool meeting at a highly publicized MXdN style event. Bring on the cheerleaders!!
great story about Wardy, I got one from OCIR too. So my old man calls up DG says his kid needs a ride for the high school MX qualifer at OCIR. Unbelievably they gave me a bike, it was actually the bike Danny Laporte was going to ride the next day at the Saddleback national, Maybe it was a Trans Am back then. Anyway Dan from DG brings the bike out to the race, I get almost no practice on the thing and line up for the first moto. It's the fastest thing I've ever been on, unreal fast for the time. I get out of the gate bad, hold it on around the start sweeper and do the biggest highside ever. Completly wad the bike, tank, fenders, shift shaft busted off and my bell is rung hard. Dan is all pissed off and tells me I have to go back to the shop with him (late at night) and if you remember the rumors about Dan I was like No F"N way I'm going back to the shop alone, finally convinced one of my buddies to go with me. I think we were there until 3am fixing that thing and I'm feeling the effects of a concussion the whole time, pretty miserable.
Your right we did have some good riders go through Rancho, Doug Silverstien, Greg Sokol, Richard Sciuto, Mark Tyer, Bob Madden, Mike Winters and you know Josh Grants dad Mike went to Rancho, Great times....
