I was just diagnosed with early stage PD, and from what I've read, it affects everyone differently. There's no telling how long it will take to progress from one stage to the next, or if I will experience all of the stages. I'm still learning, so please excuse anything that may not be accurate. I liken the disease to a hurricane (no pun intended) far off in the Atlantic: there's no telling when/if it will worsen or how bad the damage will be, but batten down the hatches and prepare for the worst. So far, my only symptoms are light tremors on left side and my left arm does not swing when I walk...I thought I just had nerve damage from my shoulder injury at Waggaman Motocross many moons ago. My specialist opined that there are two distinct types of PD....one involves stiffness, slow gait, muffled speech, and the other is more tremor-specific. Mine is the second type, and my specialist said that's the lesser of two evils. Not sure about any of that, as I have not read that anywhere. But, exercise is the only proven way to help slow the progression, so you better believe I'm already overdoing it.
Great info above, MPJC, and best of luck to you and Rhinestone Cowboy in your battles!
Mine is the non tremor specific type. Interestingly, I initially thought it was nerve damage to my shoulder too. I’d crashed and landed on it in 2021. But the specialist who did a nerve conduction test ruled that out and referred me to a neurologist. I didn’t think Parkinson’s because I had no tremor. So I was rather surprised.
One of the issues I run into is people often assume I’m fine because they don’t see me shaking, so they don’t realize my limitations. Sometimes I just need to step away from things and rest - sometimes just let my medication work. Levodopa and Pramipexole work very well for me. Meds and exercise to keep the symptoms manageable.
Peter, feel free to message me if you need to chat with someone else who is also dealing with Parkinson's. Best of luck to you as well!
I always think about Kent when Diffey refers to AP as "The Cowboy"....then I shake my head.
Hang in there Kent. Always a fan.
