Local motocross rider Saunders severely injured
Posted: Aug 29, 2010 9:41 PM EDT
Local motocross rider Eric Saunders is recovering in an Indianapolis hospital tonight after crashing at his home track.
It was initially thought that Eric's spine was severed but his father, Irish Saunders, tells FOX 28 Eric's spine was stretched. This gives the family hope for recovery.
Eric was practicing on the dirt track on their property Saturday when he crashed. He was airlifted to Indianapolis and underwent 4 hours of surgery Sunday to align his stretched spine.
He has no feeling from the chest down.
Eric signed with Nascar driver Tony Stewart's race team when he was 9 years old and was running in the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Nationals circuit.
The family would like to thank everyone for their support, including Nascar driver David Stremme and USAC racing.
Eric was practicing for the Pro outdoor Nationals coming up next weekend in Pittsburgh.
Sunday was Eric's 18th birthday.
He has been racing since he was 6 years old and earlier this summer he talked to about making it to the pros.
From that report above though, are they thinking he may walk again since the spine was stretched and not severed?

Prayers for a full recovery. This is at least 5 SCI's in this neck of the woods in the last few years.
Prayers and Best wishes sent.
Any word on how the operation went today? I am praying for the best.
