Tony Alessi. But according to the expose on Inside the Moto, poverty destroyed his pro aspirations.

on a related Inside the Moto sidenote: Ryan Villopoto did not have a successful amateur career. Nope.

Pretty sure going straight to a factory Suzuki out of the Ams makes you a 'next big thing'...

There were plenty of kids in that situation who never made anything of it. Were Bess and Shimp the 'next big thing'? They were both in that same situation. Listen, I'm certainly not saying they weren't fast as hell. But there's still a very significant step between guys who made it and the ones that didn't. For every Andrew Short or Ivan Tedesco who made factory rider careers after being not so stellar amateurs, there's a thousand who didn't. Are they all the next big thing?
I get what you are saying......(shawn142) ......these threads usually turn into a contest for guys to name every fast rider they ever knew.

In your class Pastrana was the "can't miss kid." In my era it was Ricky Carmichael. This year it was Eli Tomac. Not sure about next year....every year may not have that "can't miss kid."

Basically kids who had a shot at winning in their first 5 pro races. Not kids who came in and got 17th and had to work their way to the top.

shae? He won a sx title so I'd say he made it.

Matt Maximoff, I expected more out of Walker, James Justice never made the big bike jump well, Danny Carlson showed up with Mcgavrin to mini o's one year on 80's and we worked those guys, Trettle's had a rough go at it, Nick Adams, Paul Currie, Tom Barron, ect...

P.S. Remember the Lachiway brothers? They had the ninja turtle gig going on?

I know Tom really well myself. He was battling for wins at LL, winning winter series races against Shea and won some mini o's events.

Not saying he was the next big thing, but he was doing really well when he got on big bikes and then the steam came out.
