Brent,

CamP is an Architect, so he could handle your design interview, I would think

If you want a house to cost you twice as much as it should to build, hire a PM and Architect.

No no you have it wrong. The house doesnt fall on your head - Rat falls off the house and lands on his head.

On a side note - a place we are building right now is so fucking over engineered it is ridiculous. The engineer and architect must be bright eyed right out of school or something. Half the pages on the prints dont even match the other half. Its amazing what is considered a blue print these days. Not only that - but this shit actually passed by the building department and got approval. Do they even look at this stuff other than when they want to screw over the builder for some stupid crap and give us a hard time?

They are not even any good for wiping your ass with. Almost as useless as a construction schedule.

All the mechanical engineering/design flunkees usually end up in architectural design type jobs. Seriuosly, how hard is it to draw 90 deg angles all day.

Our project engineer showed up on our job site one day and introduced himself.First thing one of my employees says is "you must of went to a shitty school""Why do you say that?"was the engineers reply.Frank looked him square in the eye and said "Because you make a lot of dumb mistakes."
We did a foundation with a lot of angles and 15 feet of elevation difference .We couldnt get it to lay out to save our ass. We ended up hiring a surveyor to lay it out for us.After punching the numbers he informs us all the measurements on the prints are wrong.
We are currently working on a project where the foundation plan, the floor plan, and engineering details all have different measurements for the same thing. The point Im trying to make is the guys who went to college are usually the dumbest f#%&s involved in the projects.
I hope this helps you with your report!!

no. there is just a good pool of contacts here in the construction industry. i know you guys are busy, so i figured if anyone is willing to help out, that it would be easier to help on their own time rather than me bugging them on the phone while they are at work.

i can call you if you want me to though 8)

actually, I did my inteview for you here at work. I didn't know you were headed into the design end, though. I'm not sure I'd have participated!!! (J/K)

Seriously, I work with different Architects documents on a daily basis and the horror stories relayed on here are overblown. Sure there are mistakes, but there are contract provisions to correct them, and usually they are minor to start with. You can't look at a set of typical bid documents for a large construction document and tell me there aren't going to be issues. Think about all the knowledge that has to be accounted for on a large construction project.

i havent really decided if im going totally design or not. this degree will give me the option. right now im just working on stuff for my classes, no real world work. i do like the drawing part though. i like cadd and once i start with the 3d side, i know i will love that. i like projects that are tangible like that. we will see what happens. i have a loooooooonnnngggggggg way to go!!

The best advice I can give you is put a hammer in your hand for a year or so.The biggest problem in my opinion is way to many of these designers, engineers, and archeitecs have never swung a hammer.A few years in the field would be good for your career.
As for the overblown horror stories, those were just the tip of the iceberg....

3d is coming fast. Integrated designs for all disciplines.

Of course, most construction hacks can't read a set of prints or specs so horror stories are not a surprise. On the construction side, a good contractor/site project manager makes all the difference. Major errors on drawings are usually caught by a decent contractor BEFORE a lot of money is wasted...not their job? Maybe not, but that is the difference between good projects and bad ones. You can have perfect documents (ok, near perfect) and a shitty contractor will ruin the project. You can have minimal docs and a good contractor will build a masterpiece. But most contractors are average or poor.
