LOL I just started searching for 59th and Douglas on the web and found this place. All these posts were great even though most were after I quit racing.

...and Whisperin' Smith is nothing but a legend! I never have seen the guy, but I have heard stories going back over 20 years about him.

vickie... david is literally one of my best friends. The crew is me (greg mcquerry), mike ollison, david, little kenny, and rooster. We goto taylor park co every year on a big guys trip for a week (i missed this year). And my birthday is on the 9th, A1, steaks, 102 degree pool, and live sx, and all will be there... its on!

Whispern, the worlds fastest fireman! I dont even know where to begin with the whispern stories!

best part of 59th, was over the years, the sheer number of mx legends that have came thru there. The local, lived there or were close talent, Reynard, Marley, Cliff Palmer, Trey Ownes, Whispern, Terry Osbounre, Dennis Ownes, Jack Brassfeild, Waylen Litchfield, Homer Wolfslayer, Greg Brown, Eubanks, Chan Baker, Clifford Adonpte (can never remember how to spell his name, but his dad Topper was one of the nicest guys I ever met) Cooper, Brett Schumate... then you had the guys you would see from time to time,
Windham, Chicken, Lamson, Boyer, Pastrana, Stephson, Charlie Boggart, Walker, man, too many to list!

During the summer, there would be the night time national that was a big race, but the Dr Pepper race was HUGE. We look up one tuesday evening in 92 or 93, here comes cooper, and the rest of team suzuki. 1998, Reynard and Cooper battling it out in the 125 pro race, last corner, Cooper, NAILS robbie, then they get back to the pitys, Cooper comes stomping over and literally proceeds to cuss robbie out for letting him let cooper even get that close! HE was like, "Dont you EVER let someone do that to you! You left the door wide open!" and Robert is around the side of the box van crying hes laughing so hard... there is NO whining when Coop is around! So next race, robbie, goes balistic fast, for about 3 laps out of 10. Then we are all like wft is he doing, he about ate poop just then, wth? He broke a foot peg off the right side.... gee, never heard a 98 suzuki doing that (rolls eyes) SO here comes coop, robbie is havign none of it! 59th actually had damn good whoops in the day, robbie is hitting them so fast hes sitting down and still skimming. Cooper, he should go into the motivational busniess!

man, 59th and tuesday nights... THAT was the best thought! if i could go back it would be to then!
I think i've read that Reynard Cooper story twice on here now, and it never gets old Smile

Yesterday (July 11th) we had a reunion of sort for all riders who raced Oklahoma Motocross in the past. Most of us raced in the 70's with some into the 80's and others still riding today. We all raced at 59th & Douglas which was the common thread amongst us all.

There were 13 in attendence on this day in Duncan, OK at the home of Randy Russell who graciously hosted the gathering. Also in attendance were Mark Russell, Trey Jorski, Chuck Cooper, Mike Patterson, Clarence Fortney, Doug Nelson, Lee Anderson, David Fultz, Dennis Morris, Curtis Ross and Mike Steil.

Stories are just stories until you hear it from the horses mouth and this fast group had some great memories and experiences to tell.

Clarence Fortney's mom had saved all the old liturature from back in the day for us to look through. From Southwest Cycle News to Oklahoma Cycle News we all scanned the articles that brought back memories and story's never told till now. LOL
We look forward to the next gathering and want to get more riders involved.

We have a Facebook group page for those who would like to join and share. Just seach for the group Oklahoma Motocross: The Glory Days. Hope to see you there!!!

Ahh!!! I was just a piece of undeveloped sperm back in the 70's, and part of the 80's, but while I was reading this, I was thinking it would be neat to have a reunion. I would of loved to have attended, and just listened to all the story's.

Either way, that jump was pretty gnarly.
No Chuck he didn't end up in the stands...
He was on his Noleen?sizzler YZ80 and blew up his front wheel which was an Excel Rim/Talon hub/ buchannon spoke setup... exploded!

You riding supermoto now? Last time I saw you ride was at Interstate, or whatever they called it when the Hudiberg Auto Group took it over. BTW this is JW Patton... I rode for Kenny at Honda of Tulsa and ran around with the Humps and Johnny.

Levi owns a bar in Morris OK called Roadhouse. I'm sure he'd shit himself if you strolled in one night!

Supermoto looks like lots of fun. Where do you race at? I know they held a race at the Norman kart Track last year and I think they race some at Mac Park in OKC.

Lots of great stories about this place guys. Sounds like it must have been a money maker, why did it close?

Tinker AFB if I am correct. The threat of them taking the property was always there.

59th shut down in either 05 or 06 i "think" i am pretty sure it was arond then. I know it was open in 04 because they had the triple before the tunnel and I followed Abney over it on my 04 crf450 (my first thumper i got in jan or december of 03/04) and raced a few times that spring on tuesday nights.

Tinker AFB owned the land, the track leased it if im not mistaken. when the lease was up, Tinker didnt want it reupped. they were doing a ton of building at that time.

if you lived and raced in okla, THE night for 59th was tuesday nights. practice at 6:30, races at 7, maybe 9 to 11 classes. Little bikes (50's) went first, then 65's (1 class), 80's, (2 classes 1 gate), and usually it was beginner classes, 125 and 250 (sometimes 1 gate sometimes 2), then over 25, C B and A, in 125 and 250 flavor. You would be done by 11. Then if you knew somebody, you would hang around, let it clear out, and go ride! lol

I remember in 96 they had a class called over 25. For several years it was THE most competitive class. Not the fastest (not far off it though) but the most riders and alot could haul ass. there was no A B C to it, over 25? line up. it was nutz.

I think the bike Alvin is on in the picture is a 1973 Yamaha 100mx (LT2) as seen in the picture below. I had a 1972 LT-2 that had a solid green tank when I first started racing. Wish I still had it today. Smile

We should have a reunion.
You should come join our Facebook group Oklahoma Motocross: The Glory Years. We just had a reunion with most of us being from the 70's but we would like to get anyone and everyone involved that raced at 59th. It's a great way to make contact with all those guys you used to race with and against.

Let me know if you want more info. We will be planning more reunions in the future for sure.

We should have a reunion.
We've had about 5 over the past 10-12 years. Mostly the 70's crowd, although Chuck said that Guy is considering hosting one at his place next year. That would surely pull the 80's riders, and more, out of the woodwork.

Yes. Chuck was at the reunion Sunday. Guy had something else to do and couldn't make it down.
