I'm curious if there are any people or companies I can rent a bike and gear from near the Toulouse area -- I'm about an hour north of the city (outskirts of Montauban) and I'm here until the 9th.
I'm pretty amazed at the number of tracks all over the country - I always thought SoCal was the mecca, but France seems to be flooded with tracks!
I'd love to ride with some cool locals -- my fiancée is French, so I'll be returning here yearly.
Good luck with that mate. There is no such thing as renting a dirtbike in France to be fair. Unless you find a track where that service is available (I live in South East of France and i've never seen any track where this was even close to a possibility). Surely you could find a riding school where you could prob get a clapped out bike to ride for a couple hours under supervision. I don't even know if they would let you ride on our tracks without the proper licence issued from the french federation, for insurance matters (altough you could find tracks that would allow you to pay said licence for one day).
Ah, I see - I didn't know it was that strict.
I was gifted a Smartbox for Christmas, found one motocross spot, but when I called; their selection of bikes were either a surron or a CRF125 trail bike. Also the pictures of their place looked like a dirt field.

So it looks like obtaining a license is pretty simple -- would any local be willing to rent me a bike + gear? Or is that not an available avenue?
Taking a FFM licence for the day (pass circuit) is probably your best bet to be allowed to ride and be covered by insurance.
As said above renting dirtbikes is not common but you could try your luck at some riding schools (and maybe get your fiancee hop on a bike if she doesn't ride already), they are typically offering training with an option to rent bikes, and sometimes just renting, basic gear should also be included.

Then that's not what you're asking for but it'd be easier to find a trail guide that could also rent you a small trail bike like a CRF300L. Scratch your itch a bit even if it's not on track.
Also coming from the US at some point you could try combining family visit with some MXGP race (we have 2 rounds in 2025), early bird is typically 60€ for the weekend + 20€ for paddock access.
