I used to check in at Vital at least 10 times a day to see what was going on. Like a few others I'm just losing interest. Always made it to Glen Helen, and my kids were actually convinced it was better to go there for the national than it was to take real vacation.

Between the Saturday races, timed qualifying, TV time sucking, and no real rivals on the track, I'm kinda just "over it." The only reason i know who is leadingthe points is because I was talking with someone tonight who brought it up.

Seems I'm not the only once was a core fan, to kinda lose interest in the nationals..

I'm sure DC will be along shortly to tell us all how great it's all going. How happy the team managers and the riders all are..

I've seen one race on TV this year so far, and just stumbled on that one..

Oh well, I'm sure with that stellar Saturday TV package mx is getting more and more fans every week..

Over it? Yeah, I can easily see that. Your posts have reflected that feeling for quite a while now.

If you want, I can help "cure" the remnants of your addiction. Cold turkey. Wink

(Humming the theme song from On Any Saturday...)
When I first signed up I saw some of these guys that had been on here for a long time and an incredible number of posts. I thought I will never be close to those numbers. But at the rate that Gibby is clicking the OG's I will be top ten by DEC(theme to the Jefferson's playing in background).Tongue

I I know with football, baseball, Nascar, and even Supercross, they usually post the attendance for the event. I was wondering what the attendance figures are for outdoor MX cause it doesn't seem close to the SX attendance, but this is just my take.

The race in Thunder Valley look like the attendance was small, but I wasn't there. I only saw what appeared to be small from the TV screen.

Is attendance down at all outdoor mx races ? I know at Unidilla, it wasn't like it was in the early 90's, let alone the 70's during a Trans-Am race. That place used to be packed!

I miss the chanting of the"THE OTHER SIDE SUCKS!!" and all the other antics that went on in the 70's. That was a great time and the announcer calling everyone "TURKEYS" was just priceless. Who announced there throughout the 70's anyhow?
I'm mostly joking...note the lame winky emoticon in my post to Trip.

The thing is, and call me silly, I generally think the purpose of the forum is for people who actually like the sport. That's whether they're a fan, rider, racer, parent, etc. When it just gets overwhelmingly bitter and/or cynical, it starts bugging me. And with Trip, I can't remember the last time he posted something even remotely positive. Sometimes there's a vocal minority who just seem to get disaffected, unhappy, and can't seem to post enough about how unhappy they are. That gets really old. And that's just my opinion. Smile

Yeah, I get that.

There lots of people on here that I could do without, just like a lot could do without me, but, hey, that's life!

Just hate to see some of these guys get the boot, not naming names, but the place is a lot less interesting without them. And the fact that you have to include "]sarcasm" at the end of every little joking comment you make, cause the new guys won't get it, is lame too.

Just another opinion.

Actually when I posted the "score" I was referring the prediction that DC would show up. I wasn't taking sides. Haven't been to a National since 99. Closest race is 8 hours away plus the bullshit at customs. Not willing to do it anymore. Not enough hours in the day or week. Having said that, grateful for the t.v coverage even if I disagree with some of the coverage. The commercialism of the sport is regrettable, but inevitable as it becomes more popular. If attendance is down, the economy is probably the culprit. JMO

Outsider nailed it.
everyone around here can agree on everything, never shoot any jabs and make Guyb's job easy but that is not what made this place fun and its not working now.

By the way did anyone ever post any attendence numbers?

It's down because they are cheating us imo. How great was it when you had your whole weekend planned to make a trip to your favorite outdoor knowing you were going to get a full weekend of practice and racing in? You get there on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday depending on if you were doing the amateur races or not and settle in for a weekend of fun. Saturday morning you're up watching the bikes hit the track for the first time, the adrenaline is pumping and you get to enjoy the pit area, everyone is laid back because this is practice day right? Tomorrow, Sunday, is when motocross has always dropped the gate for the greatest sport in the world although you are having a blast today, you still have tomorrow! Another day of practice and then the motos! Not anymore! Now it's get to the track, cram everything that should be spread out over two days into one, run around like crazy between trying to take in the pits and practice. Try not to miss your favorite rider but your stuck in line for an autograph and there is no tomorrow anymore, etc. It sucks! It is hurting the sport. MX racing is a Sunday tradition. Leave Saturday racing for the "show" of SX. <>

Don't even get me started on timed qualifying. That takes the racing out of racing and again shortens everything for the fans. I know some local guys that made High Point a couple of times when there was real qualifying because they got a good start and finished strong enough to make it. Now a fast guy can throw in a good lap and call it good. It's just a bad deal for the sport and it cheats us out of getting to see what we came for.... racing.
Well said, some things can't be hurried and rushed into one day.
A planned weekend of moto, camping and all things good. Campfires and barbecues, a few beers... I have a feeling that it'll never be that way again. What a shame.
And all to further our "sport." I'm just wondering out loud, what sport we're talking about and how did most of us get talked into this "great idea?"

Davey why even respnd to all the negativity? Some of these old pissed off people don't like change for any reason. Everything was always better in the old days mentality. I personally like the changes that have been made and will have attended 2 nationals, 3 SX's and the des Nations by the end of the year. Keep up the good work.

Not yet. That was the intension of my post and nothing more. See how it has stirred everyone up? Cripes , I didn't mean to get the lowdown on "why or "whynot" in attending the nationals. Even though I have stated why I do not attend, I just wanted to know the attendance and look how it has gotten out of control.

Why Is this such a sore subject . A couple of years ago I asked this very same question on another forum and it turned into a flaming post like usual. I would love to do finger pointing, as I think I have some knowledge on the subject, but I am not stooping to that level.

I see DC was on here, the Dave Coombs of the NPG ,and he hasn't answered the original question, so I think the question will remain unanswered. The promoters are happy, so I guess that is all that matters!!!!! 5000 or 50,000, they are happy!!

I do think that the payback, or lack of, is one of the major reasons are sport isn't taken seriously in the mainstream press. That and not much for attendance. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not negitive, but MX outdoors isn't much farther along than in the late 70's.

Honda907, I am not Dave Coombs of the NPG, that was my dad. I am part of MX Sports, and we are doing our best to grow the series collectively with 12 individual promoters. Each of the promoters controls and counts their own gate, and I believe that information is up to them to share, not me. I know the ticket count for High Point is ongoing, and it's hopefully going to be better than last year, but I am eternally optimistic.

You think the payout for the riders is a major reason the sport isn't mainstream? LMAO

Do you want them to do it like Youthstream and triple the actual number and claim another 4 million watched it on TV?

I'm sorry DC. I am curios about the numbers, that is all. And no, it was never as good as you remember it. I know that!

I guess you would be Davey, and not Dave. The one that rode 75 or 80 back in 1980. I thought your name was Dave also. Sorry about the confusion as I know your Dad, Dave Sr. died in 1998 or so. I really did admire him!!!

I remember him racing at the PA farm show and thinking when I hit 40, I hope I'm still doing it. Well, I am well past 40 and still racing and still enjoying it. I just want the sport to grow, and all this bickering doesn't do any good.

I was a lurker here for years, never posting anything until just a few weeks ago. Like usual, I struck a chord with this subject, or pro pay, every time.

DC needs to quite surrounding himself with "yes men." He keeps asking the industry what they want, but doesn't really ask the fan what he wants. Of course the riders want to do less work, who doesn't? I think people are afraid to piss anyone in the industry off. Everyone kissing DC's ass in the hopes of one day getting that media pass so they can take pics at a national. DC should of worked on getting the sport fixed before you worried about a live TV time on a Saturday afternoon when your target audience is more than likely out riding..

I compare the mx season now to WNBA. They have live TV, (that not many people watch) dont they? The have sponsors who pay to have names on uniforms, dont they? But still people just don't watch. I can only guess what the TV ratings are for mx, but I'm guessing they are not stellar. On a Saturday afternoon when mx is on, they are up against infomercials, and we still don't get numbers. I will bet everything I own, that if the TV numbers were good, we would be hearing about it weekly. Problem is the people who know the numbers are not talking. You do the math.

As far as Gibby calling me out about being negative? Maybe? I did post some pics at Glen Helen before the gp. I said who I thought looked good, and who I thought looked slow. Instead of remembering who I said looked fast, some of you want to jump my ass because I said Hamblin looked slow compared to some others. If Sean was really a second faster than some top ten guys at two practice tracks, don't you think he would have a ride right now?

This goes back to the negative talk....
Sorry I'm not on the Dungey bandwagon. The kid is to vanilla for me. Everyone talking about the new golden boy with his Nike and Target sponsorship and how he is going to bring the sport into the mainstream. I don't see it, you need a personality, and he has no personality. How is anyone going to relate to him, hell nobody even knows him, the guy is a freakin' robot.

I'm not a traditionalist, I like the four stroke. I also like racing!! Meaning you race your way in to the mains against riders, not a clock. . What's next, all riders get three laps to try and best each others times? Winner is who has the fastest lap time at the end.

People all over the world like the Saturday racing? Get a grip, your just fooling yourself. Go to a practice track on a Tuesday and ask some of the locals at the track what they think about the awesome TV package. Go talk to the fans, because without them, mx really will be the WNBA..

AMEN BROTHA!!!!!

I think you have taken the words out of my mouth!!!!! I feel the same way!!! Glad it is your butt they hate more than mine!!! I didn't want to go and do finger pointing, but man Trip, you are so right!!!

I have been around this sport since 71, racing for over 33 years (still active) and if you can't pull me to a national, then you have a problem.

Maybe the NPG can look at this and use it as constructive criticism. Maybe not. I would LOVE to see them succeed big time, but if they don't have the paying casual spectator, it will never be more than it is . Just hardore single male 20 and 30 somethings with nothing better to do on a Saturday.

You're right Trip, I think we're doing pretty damn good considering the economy, the global motorcycle market, and the over-abundance of things for people to do with their spare time (like get on a message board and bitch about a sport). The teams, the riders, the sponsors and the fans all over the world seem to really enjoy the coverage, but since you're no longer a fan, that would be lost on you.

The promoters all seem very pleased with their events so far, including Tony who chimed in here, the Dirt Diggers, Jonathan Beasley, David Clabaugh and my own mom. It's easy to poke holes in everything, but we're all doing the best we can. I have a feeling Red Bud will be massive this weekend, as well as live on NBC...

No TV means no big sponsors for the riders and teams, and the best TV for a sport our size comes with Saturday events. And I know the traditionalists still don't like it, and I respect that, but the riders and the teams love it. And that's a very important ingredient to making the whole series a success.

everyone on this forum loves this sport (i ride and i support several riders with ca$H)

the overwhelmingly bitter and/or cynical attitudes that you may feel is because of the love of the sport.....not the hate of it.

watching moto for a million years now.....honestly nothing has changed. the people promoting the sport have never made a nickle running it and will spend millions to save it for themselves and to keep others out, wont open their books to show all the millions they are losing and will barely pay for more than a billboard to promote it.

if that is supposed to inspire enthusiasm in the type of personality that a moto head has......you are hangin with a differant croud of riders than the rest of us!

here is one idea to improve the event:

put the fan back closer to the track. just work on that one and you will pick up more spectators.

if the distance between the track and you at the live event is just fine, raise your hand!

EXACTLY. I've been a MX fan since 1976 and cramming everything into one day is just too much. You can't even go through the pits and check it all out unless you're willing to miss some practice.
And who wants to drive a long distance for a one day event? Two days of practice/racing was so much better.

Kawboy, we were getting roosted senseless under the trees at Freestone. That was as close as I want to get.

Driven by the dollar, we've been spurred on for years to "help this sport grow." May the pendulum swing before the axe.
Oh yeah, buy a four-stroke. They're the way to go!!

WEEKEND SCHEDULE:
The hectic and experimental Saturday single-day event should be discontinued, in favor of a more
relaxed and accommodating weekend format, with Sunday hosting the premiere featured events.
Saturday afternoon practice and qualifying races will provide local fans with an opportunity to see
regional racers attempt to make into Sunday mornings qualifiers, which will feature seeded riders from
the present year’s top-ten in series standings. Saturday afternoon will also feature a women’s event,
with the top-ten seeded into the 150cc class on Sunday.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON:
12 p.m. Practice sessions and short qualifiers for 150, 250 and Open (“WORLD CLASS”) races.
SUNDAY MORNING: 8 am – short practice sessions. 9:30 – short qualifiers (4 laps)
SUNDAY AFTERNOON: 1 p.m – 1st 150 Class Race (20 mins plus 1 lap)
1:30 – 1st 250 Class Race (30 mins plus 1)
2:15: -1st World Class Race (40 mins plus 2)
3:30: 2nd 150 Class Race
4:00 2nd 250 Class Race
4:45 2nd World Class Race
5:30
Rupert,
Perfect. I used to love watching Tucker Hibbert try to qualify through this sat qualifier at Millville to see if he could get into the Sunday program. This "wham, bam, thank you Ma'am" doesn't work for me. Maybe better for Bubba, but he doesn't partake anyway, so why are we bending over for him anyhoo? I love Sundays, and I loved the two day program. It was a week end man!

The thing is, and call me silly, I generally think the purpose of the forum is for people who actually like the sport. That's whether they're a fan, rider, racer, parent, etc. When it just gets overwhelmingly bitter and/or cynical, it starts bugging me. And with Trip, I can't remember the last time he posted something even remotely positive. Sometimes there's a vocal minority who just seem to get disaffected, unhappy, and can't seem to post enough about how unhappy they are. That gets really old. And that's just my opinion. Smile

the overwhelmingly bitter and/or cynical attitudes that you may feel is because of the love of the sport.....not the hate of it.

watching moto for a million years now.....honestly nothing has changed. the people promoting the sport have never made a nickle running it and will spend millions to save it for themselves and to keep others out, wont open their books to show all the millions they are losing and will barely pay for more than a billboard to promote it.

if that is supposed to inspire enthusiasm in the type of personality that a moto head has......you are hangin with a differant croud of riders than the rest of us!
Nice accurate answer. I like.

Do you want them to do it like Youthstream and triple the actual number and claim another 4 million watched it on TV?
