I went to a Puddle of Mudd concert last night. It was in a small club that held 900 to a 1000 people and they really put on a good show. What really caught my attention was how hard the back up bands worked. None of the back ups were bands that I have, or would have on my ipod, but with that said, they worked their asses off and put on a good show. Here are back ups from last night.

These guys are from Austrila and are kind of a AC DC knock off but they really worked their asses off and put on a good show.

These guys are from Louisiana and they were also pretty dam good live. As I have said before, little bands like this work their asses off.

These guys are from Canada and hit the stage like a locomotive.

I saw neurosonic with a couple of other bands a few months back. There were only maybe 50 people there and Neurosonic was trying hard. They have a couple of good songs and their Ashley Simpson song, "So many people" is incredible. The bassist marching around is creepy but I liked it.

Saw George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers couple of nights ago at the HOB. They still bring it better than most of the young punks.

Billy Bob Thornton's Boxmasters? Not so much. But he gets a free pass cuz he was banging Angie Jolie for a few years. <img class= " title="Wink">

99% of them will have nothing to show for their efforts I hate to say. The music industry is one big giant steaming pile of crap, at least for musicians. It's a great industry if you are a producer, label head, or a promoter.
A record company will suck up your soul and spit out a dried husk on the pavement in about one minute if you are a musician.

Something I've been wondering, what does a headlining touring band make. An example, I saw Dropkick Murphys a couple of weeks ago for the third time in the last year. I think they're pretty much on the road 9-10 months a year, the club they played was probably 1000 people @ $25 a pop for the paid tickets. There was a bar, rough estimate, they sold maybe 750 beers(cans)@ $4 or $5. They probably did pretty well on T-Shirts @ $15 or so. What would a band of that caliber rake in a night? I'm assuming that accounts for the largest chunk of income.

My guess is that they are also getting paid by their record companies. Dropkicks sell a lot of cds.

They are one of my favorites.

After I wrote that I searched CD sales, the entire catalog has sold about 1.5mil copies over 10 or so years. I have every CD, have bought 2 of a couple because I lost them. It said about 250,000 of Meanest of Times which sounds about right with the 1.5mil number since I would bet a good number of those 250,000 own most or all of the others. Seems like a good living but not Rapper money which I don't understand at all, most of that MTV Cribs stuff has to be the record companies throwing them a (leased)bone.

50 Cent's first record Get Rich Or Die Trying has sold 14 million records.
His second record The Massacre sold 12 million records
Third records sold 691,000 in the first week.

I honestly don't think most of the stuff on cribs is from the label. Hip Hop is huge, and kids eat it. Even producers are making huge money. Producer Scott Storch made 17 million dollars in 2007.

My favorite bands are Pennywise and Agent Orange.

Liquor is through the roof at those places. I cant imagine how much they make off alcohol. At HOB and palladium Vodka and redbull was a little over $10.

Funny how every new Rap song is just about short enough to be a ring tone. I think they make far more off those than actual records. 90% of rap on the radio is crap anyways.

Mastodon have been a favorite of mine for some time now. Their drummer is amazing at how he plays fills for just about the full song.
Living End are really good as well.
A lot of bands out there today are hard at work but it's a hard gig traveling non stop and playing for peanuts.

The Living End shows are so full of energy. Millencolin shows are the same.
