The core of racism is selfishness and laziness. When you have racist beliefs, you automatically get to be superior to a huge group of people without ever having to lift a finger. You can be the biggest loser, playing xbox in your mother's basement but you are immediately better in every way than some other kid who logs on because you got to be born the race you are. You are not only better than him, you're better than his whole family and you always will be. You can quote stereotypes that you've seen that will prove you're right. This superiority allows you to treat him with the contempt he deserves before he even opens his mouth.

Unfortunately that is why racism will never die entirely. It's too useful.

Everytime I walk into the grocery store at 16th st. and baseline (south phoenix) I get harrassed, stared down, or yelled at. It is a african american dominated neighborhood. Racism goes both ways, and I see it coming from the other end of the color spectrum just as much.

I said that those things are the very core of racism. What perpetuates it is when people make assumptions about others based on their race and that does go both ways. The question is, do you allow the racist actions of others, whether they're black or white, control your actions?

People can always find stereo types to justify their own racism, no matter what race they are. Plenty of stuff some Black folks do in the name of being Black that I don't like. And it's an easy trap to start generalizing about how I feel about anyone who's African American. Those people who're bad mouthing you are generalizing about white folks. But you either think it's OK to generalize like that or you don't. You either resist the trap or you don't. You either perpetuate the problem or you don't.

As a southern man, I feel ashamed and embarrassed by that.
