I race a TX Hare Scramble series on a 22 KTM 250xc. Thinking about my next bike and will prob be one of the ones listed above. I put about 60-70 hrs a year on a bike and was curious how the maint pencils out. Not oil changes but rebuilds. I love the 4T platform but don’t feel comfortable doing motor work - I can do 2T top ends no problem.
Advice ?
Their isn't a universe in existence where a 2stk costs more to maintain than a 4stk. Especially racing it.
I have a 16 350. I put WAY more hours on the engine than I care to admit before a rebuild. I tend to ride in the middle of the power band vs the top so it lasted a little longer. I love it for the hare scrambles. The series we have here tends to be a little faster and sometimes incorporates moto tracks. If it was tighter I’d lean towards the 300.
The main problem I ran into with the 350 full engine rebuild is the crank. Nobody makes an aftermarket one, has to come from KTM. KTM thinks it’s made of gold apparently. It was in the $600-$700 range, just for the crank. There are a few piston options and they are reasonable. The rest of it was as expected for a 4t. I’ve talked with tons of people that have 200+ hours on full engines. Valves are solid and don’t move very much, 100+ hours if you aren’t a top end power band guy.
Stay on the oil changes for the 350 and they are solid engines. I’ve only ridden a few 300s. Great bike to ride. I’m pretty sure they use a 250 crank and those are a lot cheaper than the 350 4t. My buddies that have them love them but I can’t speak to maintenance costs.
Thanks gents - $700 for a crank 👎🏼
