Very serious question(s)

Ok guys, dont flame me for asking this question but i just wanted to know haha. I want to start racing motocross and i wanted to know how new does the bike have to be for you to race? For example, does it have to be a brand new '10 bike or could it be as old as an '01?

I've been riding for quite some time (since i was about 6) but never thought about racing. Now that im 19, i want to pursue it Woohoo Cool

The year does not matter. If you go to a local race with an 2001 you wont have the oldest bike there.

another question to add, should i start out in the 125cc class? Basically, if anyone has any advice for a person that is/going to start racing motocross, please tell me lol. thanks

An 01 125 would be a great bike to start racing on. Cheap to buy and you can get your money out of it when you decide you want something different. After a few months of racing you will get a feel for what it takes to race motocross.

I have spent my life chasing the new bike dragon. Then I took a couple of years off when my twins arrived. When I decided to go ride again my 450 had sat for a long time and seemingly needed everything. I borrowed a buddies 04 rm 250 and had an absolute blast. Anything made in the last ten years, that is mechanically sound is good enough for a beginner. The new bike smell wears off quickly. The 8k payment book doesn't. Have fun and make sure your health insurance is up to date.

I started racing again in 04 after an 18 year lay-off, I was riding an 01 kx250, then got an 01 kx125 to play on. Got the new bike itch and bought a new rmz450, but like hacker said, that new bike smell goes away.....but the payment dont, so I cut my losses and bought a 01 rm250 and have had more fun racing again and it is plenty competitve for sure.

Getting a year under your belt with an older bike would be fine. The decide where you want to go with it. Have fun!!!!

Need a new bike if you want to earn contingency. Make sure you shop around for who is paying out the best.

Racing is all about money....that's what I learned on here.

I don't think the age of the bike matters much... especially in the +50 C class.

Have you been to your local race track on practice days yet? Please go practice before you line up on the gate. Make sure you have the appropriate gear. Helmet, goggles, MX boots, knee pads and a chest protector. Chest protector is optional but you really should have one. Your local promoter will probably have a membership that you will have to join. If it is an AMA affiliated track you will have to get that membership too. Then you will have your race fees. Your bike will have to have numbers which may or may not be the one you choose.
Get out there and practice, go to a race day as a spectator and talk to some people there. You can always just show up, sign up and race too.
Caution!! it is addicting and you will never want to stop.

^^Thanks everyone, your helpful responses is very much appreciated. I will definitely go out and practice and before anything make sure i have the appropriate gear and stuff. After looking over the responses, i will for sure go with a used bike that was made within the last 10 years....hopefully i'll be getting it within a couple weeks. I really cant wait, and im sure i'll have fun Silly

It sounds like you haven't bought one yet. If your budget allows for it, try to snag something within the last 6 years (2004+). Some of the bikes made around the 2000 mark weren't exactly the greatest....

^^Yeah, your right. I haven't purchased one yet. But i'll try and find a bike made within that time frame. Hopefully i'll luck up on one and find one in my price range (which is about 1100 or so)
