You need to get a new basket.  I'm sure its all grooved up.  Another option is to file it down.

example of a super worn out basket.

+1 on this. If you have the slack out of your lever and it still doesn't fully disengage, time to have a look at the basket. You can file out the grooves and sell it, but not very gentlemen thing to do because it will be like that within 2 hours again.

Hey thanks..I was afraid of them answers...also forgot to mention that it has been sitting in my basement for 10 years unused..so is it possible that the plates are just stuck together?

Ah ok in that case it doesn't hurt to refresh the oil and ride it around a bit to see if it improves. Oil can collect moisture over the years just sitting still in an engine and lose some of it's lubrication properties. If the clutch doesn't improve it's a simple task to take of the clutch cover and inspect it, you don't really need to disassemble it to see if it is worn.

I filled the oil to almost the top of the sight glass...10w30w...I'm gonna test ride it and tinker with the adjustment some more ..how long does it take to test ride before the clutch should be worked in enought to know if its gatta be dug into deeper.??....5 minutes??

Yeah I would guess so 5-10min would be enough to get it nice and warm and see if there is a difference. Adjust the clutch lever enough so there is minimal slack in the cable, but you don't really want to be putting any "preload" on it normally. Just have a bit of play in the lever, if you don't get it to disengage properly like that I would start inspecting clutch.

New set of plates isn't terribly expensive, but the basket is probably 200$ or more. If it comes to that there may be good enough second hand parts to be had as well

Good, yes indeed outer basket and plates is enough. Sometimes the inner basket can get wear notches too, but rarely the case.
