Just finished my first one. The stuff looks good but I had some issues.

There were color differences between parts.
The railing color was a different shade from the decking.
The post bases and caps were also a different shade.

The factory ends on the decking were way out of square. I had to cut both ends which was a pain using my compound miter saw. I had to walk each piece out to the front yard to spin it around. I guess I could have used my skillsaw but I wanted really accurate cuts.

They are giving me a hassle on returning 2 rail kits that I ended up not using.

Any of you other hammerswingers or weekend warriors used this stuff?

I used that on our deck I built two years ago. I couldn't talk myself into using wood just because of the maintenance involved with a wood deck. It looks great always. I didn't use the Trex brand though I went with the brand carried at Home Depot and really was impressed with the fact that it was all square.

Heres a pic from before I had finished the handrail.

I looked at that stuff but my customer insisted on Trex.

You can see the color differences in this pic

In my limited experience the Trex material is much more rigid than what I used; I cant recall the name of it. I do recall color variance while packing my lumber cart, very limited though. Very expensive but the reward on value and no maintenance is worth it. Our deck isn't too big but it was $3800 in materials.Dizzy

They wanted the color you have it wasn't available in Trex. I talked them into using the flat post caps. Gotta put your beer somewhere. The hardware they gave me for doing the step railing was bullshit. How do the ballusters attach to the top rail? I ended up using a 2 1/2" finish nail.

Yeah the hardware kits were shit! I had to pre-drill every balluster top and bottom and use 2 1/2" dipped deck screws( the screw thing is an OCD issue of mine ).

I did the same thing on the bottom and I probably should have ignored the instructions and went with screws on the top. If it was mine I would have but I have to follow the manufacturer's recommendations on stuff like this. If there's a problem with something they always blame the installer. The materials on this one came to $6500. There is a separate smaller deck also that's not in the pic. More like a porch.

I've done a few decks with that stuff. Honestly, if I were building one for myself, I would just go with some nice old fashion wood.

I dont like the way the stuff finishes up - although they have made some improvements with the fastening systems that they use now.

The big deal is supposed to be maintenance. I noticed that it scratches and scuffs pretty easily and there's not much you can do about it. The other thing is colors. You can get pretty artsy fartsy. Wouldn't be my choice but remember, it's almost always what the woman of the house wants. The men just pay me and shake their head. Women drive me nuts.

i know this is a super old post and totally irrelevant now, but i was looking through trying to find an old post i made. i had to put my $.02 in.
cedar is the only way to go. as far as the composites go, the home depot stuff is junk, trex is slightly better, and EverGrain is the best i've found so far. there is no structural integrity to the composite materials. pick up a 16' 1X6 from the middle and both ends touch the ground. it's old pop bottles and milk jugs. the stuff weathers for crap. the end of your deck that's farthest from your house will end up a way lighter color than the deck closer to your house (from added sun exposure) and there's nothing you can do about it. also, because of the aformentioned lack of structural integrity, your deck ends up wavier than the atlantic. it'll sag between 1 joist and then hump between the next. you really notice it when you put a table out there. set down your full cup of coffee, iced tea, crown and coke, what have you, and you spill some because the floor is a wave pool. or, if your deck is high enough you have to walk up a set of stairs that puts your eye right at floor level, WAM! it sticks out like a sore thumb.

put up a cedar deck, stain it with one of DeckScapes nice colors, and plan on doing it once every couple years. make it a nice springtime job with the Mrs.

sorry, this has been a point of contention with many customers recently. they have to have the "new, maintenance free wonder board"

Wait until the customer calls you back because it is fading differently. They don't have the dye right or the coloring. In about 4 years the sun will do serious damage to it. I have yet to find a decking material I am satisfied with. I have seen some coating systems applied to bothe wood and concrete that seem to stand up to the test of time. Poly Urea and 100% solids as well as RHINO liner type stuff is gaining in popularity.

This is true but when you sell this to customers they have the impression that it is NO MAINTENANCE! It is not! It still requires pressure washing and it fades like crazy! Some places more than others giving it a splotchy look. I had so many customer complaints when i sold that stuff that we quit doing it all together. Never a word about craftsmanship. Always material related complaints and the manufacturers (we tried several) just told the customer "yeah it does that"

The average consumer pays extra for this product thinking it is going to look beautiful forever and when it does not they get angry.

I got all my Trex for free from a job that she hated the look and I reinstalled redwood. It was in full Colorado sun so it was as faded as it was gonna get before I installed it at my house.Cool

That works!!!

I would probably use it for myself KNOWING what it will do. I would never sell it to a consumer again. Friggen nightmare. We had BBB complaints and the whole deal.

It's not even close to the same color now. I just saw it about a month ago. It's still in good shape though. They (she) is OK with the color change.
