I snapped the kicker shaft on my kx the other weekend at bar2bar and was in there to start replacing it today and noticed the basket is not only already a Hinson but it has grooves only on ~2/3 of the fingers and weird wear marks on 2/3 of the outside. Not sure if it’s from bad bearings or not pressing the gear in straight initially and trying to run it. I took the drive gear off (the crank not the basket) and spun it on the bearings and no run out that I can see.
I’m gonna file the grooves out atm since I can’t afford a clutch quite yet, this is nothing ive seen before and can’t see any reason it would be like this as the bike is now.
The wear on the outside can be caused by inserting too long of an oil filler cap. It will stick down to far and rub the outside of the basket fingers. The stock rubber oil filler cap can also break at the root and thread too far down and also do the same thing.
