Sean Lipanovich

We watched this kid race in Amateurs for a few years before he turned pro and always heard his name pronounced Li PAN o vich. Week after week I hear Ralph and Emig pronounce it Lip a NO vich. Were we wrong all those years or are Emig and Ralph messing his name up for weeks in a row. Just curious.

When I talked to him a few times at races he has pronounced it just like you did. Li PAN o vich

If I am questioning myself on how to pronounce a rider's name, I take the coward's way out. I simply ask the rider (or mom or dad). (You'd be surprised how many guys on the team don't even know how to pronounce their rider's name.)

There is nothing embarrassing about approaching the rider and double checking. I do find it a little uncomfortable if I've mispronounced somebody's name all day long.

Ross Pederson once told me, after you've heard your name said wrong a million times you don't even notice anymore. You just go with it.

Most riders simply thank me for asking.

Last names are bad enough to butcher but first names are way more annoying. My name is Shane and for the first year at my last job people would sometimes call me Sean/Shaun/Shawn. I finally got them broken of the habit and the boss went and hired a guy named Sean and from there on out both of us were constantly called the wrong name.

I wonder if anyone calls Lipanovich Shane?
