Hey all! I’ve been rebuilding a 1991 Honda CR250R (with a 1986 CR250R engine) over the last year. It’s just about complete, however, I’m having an issue with spark. It’s pretty much non-existent, but I do see a weak spark every now and then.
The biggest question I have regarding this (before I begin to dig into this issue), is that the bike has an alternator/pulse generator/exciter coil from a 1986 CR250R, but the CDI unit is from a newer model CR250R. The ‘86 exciter coil has 3 wires coming from it, and the newer models have only 2 wires coming from it. So essentially I have a wire coming from the alternator assembly that doesn’t have anything to plug into.
Does anyone know if this CDI is compatible with my bike? Or should I start looking for a good used ‘86 CDI?
I did the continuity checks in the ignition coil, exciter coil, and pulse generator, and all resistances are within spec.
I think there are two things that might be wrong with your ignition setup. I think you have a half wave exciter and a full wave CDI. Also, I think the triggers on the flywheel are different from '86 to '91. You should probably get an entire system from the same bike and year, or find an aftermarket system.
