2022 KX450, I just ordered an FMF and am wondering if I rubber mount it if I still need to reinforce the subframe? Are these things still breaking with the rubber grommet or was it just the solid mounted ones that were breaking?
Don't really feel like removing the whole subframe and taking it to the welder if they rubber fixes the issue.
I got an FMF for my '21 KX250 and you use the existing rubber grommet. It's not metal on metal.
Yeah my bad, I should have been more clear. I plan on transfering the stock rubber over to the FMF and using that.
So yours has held up fine with no reinforcement and just the rubber?
It’s always able to bend, my 23 250 with a Ti-6 which is rubber mounted bent first ride. They bend a lot easier on tip overs where it presses from the side of the muffler, I’ve cart wheeled my 450 and never bent it at all.
I've had several kawis over the years & most of them hold up pretty well. I now reinforce all my subframe tabs no matter what because I broke it off at the regional & it destroyed my exhaust, header, subframe, brake caliper. Expensive fix. Also was not pumped it cost me a moto score. Pretty easy to get them reinforced & it's pretty easy to take the subframe off. Sometimes I bend the subframe tab & have to bend it back so the pipe doesn't hit the tire.

Mine has been fine, but I only have 10 hours on the FMF silencer.
With the FMF exhaust.....i would definitely reinforce the mounting tab.
I'm pretty sure the original FMF KX model for the 2019 kx450 on up had only metal to metal installation, and you didn't use the original rubber grommet. The mounting bracket hole was as large as the bolt. Those were the pipes/subframes having issues, I think since they switched to allowing the original grommet, those subframe issues haven't been a problem. I remember that was super common on the '19s and tons of complaints, after the rubber grommet is used those threads stop existing. I would say if you crash hard enough on the pipe side, something has to give - and the pipe on these KX's stick out like crazy.
I have a new 2023 KX450 & curious if anyone knows about the subframe situation with a ti-6. My 2022 kx 250 busted a subframe so i got my other 250 & 21 450 reinforced but not sure if I'm going to do that with the 2023 yet.
Any input is greatly appreciated
Yeah, I emailed Keefer when I was still trying to decide whether or not to reinforce mine. He said no matter which aftermarket exhaust you go with, you should still get it reinforced. He said he's seen them break w/ the rubber mount.
thanks for the reply. It's pretty unbelievable that the subframes break like that. It's worth getting it reinforced though because it's an expensive break but simple to prevent.
Just always get them done. If it breaks bad and you have to order one order it for a 450SR which is a much better design. For whatever reason they know it’s a problem, made a better one and then didn’t continue to build them with the SR style. I’ve flipped bikes and been fine and my new 250 just bent immediately with a Ti-6, it’s not the exhausts fault it’s just a weak hanger
I’ve got 60+ hours on my ‘21 450 with PC T-6 and no issues so far.
I ordered my new FMF Powercore 4 and I noticed that the mfg date was 6/23. And it is a black canister instead of the aluminum “silver” contacted FMF and they told me that they are no longer making the silver canister ones… not sure if its a new design? anyways. The hanger on the FMF now has the rubber grommet space so you can use the one from the oem exhaust. I follow the advise from all of you and Keefer to get it reinforced. Here are some pics of it.
its way beefier and stiffer!
