Backgrounds of Maui Officials Who Failed During Devastating Fire Are Scandalous

The opinions expressed by contributors are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of RedState.com.

Beneath every government failure typically lies a laundry list of officials who never should have been in their jobs in the first place.

That proved true during and after Hurricane Katrina slammed into Mississippi and Louisiana in 2005, with the devastation in New Orleans becoming a national scandal. Now, the aftermath of the horrific fire in Maui, Hawaii, is following the same frustrating path.

CBS News is reporting that the emergency operations chief of the area, Herman Andaya, had no experience in emergency management.

It was ultimately Andaya's decision to not sound the emergency alert sirens, which had previously been touted as the most complete system of its kind in the world. Instead, they used cell phone alerts, ignoring that many people, including children, may have had no ability to receive them.

What was Andaya's background? He was a guy with a liberal arts degree who served as chief of staff for a small-time politician.

Trained in political science and the law, he has no formal education in disaster preparedness or response. And prior to his current role, he never held a full-time job dedicated to emergency management.

Instead, his main qualification was being chief of staff to then-mayor Alan Arakawa. But in that role, he told Civil Beat Tuesday, he assisted during emergency operations. And he said he participated in online FEMA trainings and workshops throughout the years.

In 2017, Andaya beat out 40 other applicants for the job, Maui Now reported at the time.

With wildfires ravaging West Maui on Aug. 8, a state water official delayed the release of water that landowners wanted to help protect their property from fires. The water standoff played out over much of the day and the water didn’t come until too late.

"Hawaii Dept of Land and Natural Resources has transferred Deputy Director M. Kaleo Manuel to another position following reports he declined to release water until it was too late for the water to get to Maui firefighters."

Wow, just fucking wow. Makes my head explode!

Wow, just fucking wow. Makes my head explode!

Imagine being the type of person that decided against activating the emergency sirens... and then after this tragedy not even admitting you made a mistake and defending your decision.

Maui Emergency Management Agency director Herman Andaya, who made reportedly made the final decision AGAINST activating the emergency sirens in Lahaina, Maui, has RESIGNED. The sirens were meant to alert residents of imminent tsunamis, wildfires, terrorist attacks, etc. Residents have concluded the use of the sirens would’ve saved COUNTLESS lives, but Director Andaya said he had “NO REGRETS” about refusing to activate the sirens. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green (D) has consistently defended the refusal to use sirens.

Every person that lost their homes/businesses/personal property should be made whole by the federal government before one more cent goes to ukraine.  NO native people there should have to give up their property from this fire.

Regardless of the siren f*ck up, I'm not so sure it would have saved many lives.  If you watch the video I posted you'll see the streets were being blocked/closed by police and there was already grid lock traffic without the sirens.  From what I've seen and heard, the people who made it out at the critical stage were those who were 4x4'ing over curbs, yards, downed trees, and going the wrong way in traffic like all of us moto guys would.  The average driver from the general public pool would have been stuck in traffic regardless of sirens or no sirens.

I don't disagree with this, but it's not an excuse to not use the sirens.

I lived in Hawaii for a decade. It was an awesome time in my life, but it is a very corrupt state. There is an overwhelming amount of graft and nepotism due to a very large Democrat majority government. No knock on Democrats, because I now live in a Republican-majority state, and the same problems exist here for that same reason.

Same old story, same old song, every time a disaster of any kind happens to the citizens of this nation.

I guess if the American people who are in need of disaster relief expect help, they need to relocate to Balkan, or the middle east countries of our sworn enemies.

Same goes for maintaining our infrastructure.

The power grid is being ignored in far more places than jusy Hawaii.

Billions to other places around the world, but squat for our own.

Remember, it's OUR MONEY !!!

The fire was likely started by power lines that were not maintained . Makes ya wonder where all that money for infrastructure went.

Apparently, the fire dept. was pretty pissed. They could not get water because some bureaucrat decide that the water should not be turn on. He had strong beliefs that water should not be wasted. That it was precious. He has since been relieved of his job.

I read an article that the money was being funneled to "green transition projects" and not being spent on fortifying the existing system for strong hurricane type winds..

What's kind of interesting is that the people that are crying "climate change" should have been pushing to have the system fortified. It was only a couple of years ago that the underwater volcano erupted near Tonga. Even CNN was talking about how an above ground volcano puts so much particulate in the air that it cools the weather. However, because it was under water it spewed water vapor into the atmosphere. They said then that the water vapor will heat the climate for years to come, that it would take 5-10 years for the water vapor to dissipate. So if they knew this, why were they not spending money on fixing the power lines to withstand these high winds?

Again, human decisions that made this worse.

A total of 850 PEOPLE ARE MISSING in connection with the deadly wildfires that devastated Maui earlier this month, the county's mayor announced.

In an overnight update posted to Facebook, Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen said there were now 850 people officially believed to be missing.

At least 114 people died in the wildfires, the deadliest in modern U.S. history, he noted. He said 27 victims have so far been identified, with 11 of the victims' families notified.

Bissen said the number of missing people was the result of the FBI combining and refining various lists of missing people...."

They are not MISSING, it's an island afterall, they are fucking dead.

It sounds much better to say 100+ dead, than 1000+ dead.

Democrats denying water to put out a fire. Thats not 'speculation'.  It happened.

Literally watching the world burn.

People should hang for this.

But we already know they wont.

I think it was the Mayor of Maui that was asked "how many of the names on that list are children" he feigned outrage and would not answer.

The man is a disgrace as a human being.

Out of respect for those that perished, i have resisted trying to turn this into a political thing, but fuck me, if you follow the right people , you can see that this is just beyond sanity.

If you support this shit show, the country died on your watch.

T, not much I agree with you on, well close to nothing really but I think we're in lock step here. Have you been following the "Where's the children" aspect? 400 children enrolled in New schools, 200 signed up for home schooling. However the area affected previously served 3,000 kids. And the Mayor refuses to answer how many kids on the missing list.

From the Clown House, KJP says,

"“This is something that the president takes very seriously. You’ve heard from the FEMA administrator there’s more than 600 personnel, and staffers on the ground. They’ve already provided $2.3 million of family assistance. And for those in Maui, in Hawaii, who are still looking to get that federal assistance, please go, call 800-621-FEMA. Go to disasterassistance.gov. We are here to help, the federal government is here to assist, to make sure they get everything that they need to rebuild and recover.”

So you're supposed to call with no phone service or register online when there's no internet service. And they made available a whopping $2.3 million? Hmmm 2,300,000/15,000=$154 per person? Wow, how generous. What a great job! I'm sure they'll appreciate the massive help in this time of despair. Let's Go Brandon!

So when are they going to call off the rescue mission and finally acknowledge the nearly 1000 dead?  Are they thinking they are going to find the 1000 missing people under the spoils of melted metal and fine ash?  I can't believe they are still claiming "missing" instead of deceased this long after the fire.

There's a drone vid showing the coastline of the area burnt to a crisp.

Amazingly enough, the rows of mansions within shouting distance,  are absolutely untouched.

Grass is still green.

Their water was never shut off.

While right across the street, untold numbers burned to death, homes burnt to the foundations.

Now they're shutting down anyone flying a drone, helicopters, etc... over the area.

So undoubtedly first responders flocked to those areas where the wealthy reside.

Leaving everyone else, with no water, and certain death.

And nary a head will roll.

Fucking outrageous.

So a buddy of mine works at one of the high end resorts. I asked him if the resort was full with evacuees. He said only displaced employees, doctors & nurses, and some people that are there because of the fire. Don't want to put words in his mouth but maybe those are some of fema folk? Basically empty though.
