All I know is my 6 yr old watches literally every race and is currently watching old sx while motoing his toy dirt bike while we wait for red bud to come on. The one yr old claps and makes excited noises when moto comes on. lol
All of the tracks around here get a ton of 50’s and minis. All is good I believe! If Covid did anything, it brought Moms/Dads and therefore kids back to the roots.
It's sad to see some of these parents yelling at their kids constantly. I know several of these "sideline riders" that are telling their kids to balls up and hit something big or go faster than the kid is comfortable with. I've actually offered one dad my bike to go out and show his son what he wants him to do even though the guy has never done a lap on a track in his entire life. He is known as "that Dad" that is constantly shadowing his son on the track by yelling from different points beside of the track.
The only problem I have with my son when I'll go off on him is when he comes off of the track after he has been goofing off during a race practice. With as much money as I spend to get him to the race and the cost of entry fees I want his full effort on the bike or we are staying home and he can play ride all he wants for free. As for ball sports we have been there as well with Travel-high end training teams and it sucked because we have never been the jock-style parents. I came from BMX and moto as a kid and hated all ball sports.
The best thing ever for kids now is the transition of the 50s to electric. More kids can start early and get hooked. They can ride in so many more places without push back due to the noise. When they fall in love from that young age, they're hooked for life.
When my son was young we wanted him to be exposed to other sports. One and only time in Little League I remember asking the coach once (about his own son) "Do you think he's have more fun if you yelled at him less" The look I got back was priceless. He continued to yell at him the rest of the season but did not talk to me much after that.

Those pussy living vicariously/ can't do it themselves / yell at their kids all day dad's are a joke, fuck those clowns.
Good to hear kids on bikes isn't as far gone as we often hear, but it's definitely a tough sport to pursue for the average general public family with the amount of time, money and risk involved.
💯 I grew up at 5 riding and now I’m turning 46 in Aug. my son played travel baseball from 7 years up till he was 12 when he was burnt out. We started riding alot more. I never pushed him and not riding over his head or pushing when he was tired, and track etiquette were my big things. I spent alot of money on travel ball and going out of state to play big tournaments. He’s now 15 and we ride the tracks for fun. They’re not so cal tracks by any means but here in az where we moved acp is pretty good in the am. He refuses to ride desert single track which I tell him it will make him a better rider with standing up and learning balance but was zero part of it. I’ve actually see a dad pull his kid off his 50 when he was exiting the track, dad yelled at the kid and the dad said think about it on your walk back to the car. We all gave the kid a high five and said you did awesome and gave him a coke(more to piss the dad off) and said have fun, that’s what this is all about. Some dads just need a beat down behind the truck….
Yessir the risk factor is one of the first things I tell uninformed parents about this sport when they ask about our family hobby. It's not IF their kid is going to crash but when. I always explain the risk and about our trips to the ER. The one balance I try to emphasize when explaining the risk of MX for youths is the more they ride and the better skills they develop the less they crash.
On the flip side of that is when they become the faster rider and they are hitting the bigger jumps it is usually a much worse crash than when they were going slower and rolling more hits over jumping them. Some parents get it but a lot are like "we would never put our kid in a sport as dangerous as MX". I guess it's better explained as a lifestyle choice. It's in our blood so the risk becomes just part of it without that being the main focus of our goals.
