Mike,
It would be good to produce future series with and without the long
instrumental series and maybe the documentary ones as well. The long
measurements can then be used to validate the low-freq aspects at least
back to 1750, maybe earlier with the documentary. There are some key
warm decades (1730s, some in the 16th century) which the Moberg
reconstruction completely misses and gives the impression that all
years are cold between 1500 and 1750.
Away Feb 6-10 and 12-20 and 22-25 (last in Chicago - on the panel to
consider the vertical temp work of CCSP).

Yes, we've learned out lesson about FTP. We're going to be very careful in the future
what gets put there. Scott really screwed up big time when he established that directory
so that Tim could access the data.
Yeah, there is a freedom of information act in the U.S., and the contrarians are going
to try to use it for all its worth. But there are also intellectual property rights
issues, so it isn't clear how these sorts of things will play out ultimately in the U.S.
I saw the paleo draft (actually I saw an early version, and sent Keith some minor
comments). It looks very good at present--will be interesting to see how they deal w/
the contrarian criticisms--there will be many. I'm hoping they'll stand firm (I believe
they will--I think the chapter has the right sort of personalities for that)...

Will keep you updated on stuff...
talk to you later,

Just sent loads of station data to Scott. Make sure he documents everything better
this time ! And don't leave stuff lying around on ftp sites - you never know who is
trawling
them. The two MMs have been after the CRU station data for years. If they ever hear
there
is a Freedom of Information Act now in the UK, I think I'll delete the file rather than
send
to anyone. Does your similar act in the US force you to respond to enquiries within
20 days? - our does ! The UK works on precedents, so the first request will test it.
We also
have a data protection act, which I will hide behind. Tom Wigley has sent me a worried
email when he heard about it - thought people could ask him for his model code. He
has retired officially from UEA so he can hide behind that. IPR should be relevant
here,
but I can see me getting into an argument with someone at UEA who'll say we must adhere
to it !

Are you planning a complete reworking of your paleo series? Like to be involved if
you are.
Had a quick look at Ch 6 on paleo of AR4. The MWP side bar references Briffa, Bradley,
Mann, Jones, Crowley, Hughes, Diaz - oh and Lamb ! Looks OK, but I can't see it
getting past all the stages in its present form. MM and SB get dismissed. All the
right
emphasis is there, but the wording on occasions will be crucial. I expect this to be
the
main contentious issue in AR4. I expect (hope) that the MSU one will fade away. It
seems
the more the CCSP (the thing Tom Karl is organizing) looks into Christy and Spencer's
series, the more problems/issues they are finding. I might be on the NRC review panel,
so will keep you informed.
Rob van Dorland is an LA on the Radiative Forcing chapter, so he's a paleo expert
by GRL statndards.

Of course the temperature of the planet without an atmosphere is important to a climatological model - it forms the basis for the steady-state condition. In addition, it's a constant in the boundary equations (which likely are significant sources of imprecision).

The problems with climate change science, as has been stated, are the lack of data and the lack of a robust model. The search for a robust model cannot overcome the dearth of data necessary to establish the steady-state condition. Thus scientists must predict (or guess at) data which, in ordinary circumstances, would be used to reliably calibrate the model.

It's immature science.

You haven't read the emails, yet you think what you have read - emails mostly out of context - is enough to proclaim there is nothing there.

Okay. As long as you know you're making a leap of logic and faith.

The questions I asked are fundamental to AGW science. Since you don't know that, we know you know nothing about the science end of this debate. You are political only. The only answers you get to those questions are ranges. Why? Because we don't know. Those ranges are significantly larger than the warming.

BTW, it's about -18 degree C. There is about 30 or so degrees warming attributable to our atmosphere...which includes CO2 content. Of that, it's only a fraction that's attributed to CO2. But, now all of the sudden, it's the driver.

As far as the question about the IPCC data and methodology? Trade SECRETS. The researchers don't want to share the data. That's not peer review. It's bullshit.

The reason it's fundamental because your little example starts with what the nominal temperature of the earth is without an atmosphere...then attempts to figure out how much of that heat influx is retained due to the atmosphere. So, now we have a total heat energy retained without excess CO2. Then climate scientist ask the question: How much more heat is retained due to CO2? It's a fraction of the total. The ratio of heat retained due to CO2 versus the amount of additional CO2 is not particularly well balanced. That's why it's illogical to assume that additional CO2 is the root cause of the observed heat gain....oh...but, there's still the problem of the data....that they had to do that "trick" on to make it show the temperature rise.

What they are saying about the "trick" is that the data did not support what they believe to be happening. So they tweaked the data series to make the results match the models.
So no comments on my long post, huh?

Conspiracy, collusion in exaggerating warming data,
possibly illegal destruction of embarrassing information,
organised resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data,
private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more.

And, perhaps most reprehensibly, a long series of communications
discussing how best to squeeze dissenting scientists out of the peer review process.
In other words, to create a scientific climate in which anyone who disagrees with AGW is written off as a crank, whose views do not have a scrap of authority.

You're just making up stuff that I'm supposedly sidestepping now. I read a great number of those emails, and while there are obviously things that they didn't want out there, it doesn't really say what those things are, or why, so it's all pure speculation.

So, let's concentrate on the science, as others have said they wanted to do in this thread. I gave us a starting point, yet not one person has responded to it. Imagine that!

I love this argument, because frankly, it is fairly ridiculous to argue ovet his point amongst ourselves. Here's what I can tell you from the perspective of someone who works in the political realm of this argument. NO ONE AGREES. Meteorologist in general think that climate change is bunk, climatologists usually think there is some validity, geologists think that its bunk. So you get the short and long term guys that think it isn't happening, and the middle of the road guys believing there is some credibility.
If you look at the science, then you can see the plausibility of greenhouse gasses increasing the temperature of the earth. If you look at the actual data, then really, you can't say too much, because frankly the data set isn't there.
Look at it this way. Our atmosphere has only a portion of the levels of CO2 that it has had in the past. How much less? At least 100 fold. So where did all that CO2 go. Well, plants love the stuff. and when the earth had more CO2 in the atmosphere plant growth was exponentially higher. Ever herd of the Carboniferous period. As everybody knows, all our carbon based fuels started out in the atmosphere as CO2, and only got made into other stuff when plants sucked it out of the air (still at safe levels as far as we're concerned), died, and got buried before they could decompose quick enough. So, really, we're not creating additional CO2, we're just putting some of what was in the air back there.
So why should we do anything. Well in reality, if there are simple means to mitigate what we are doing, we might as well. Admit idly, the enviros are blowing this way out of proportion, and really making this into something bigger than it is. But we should try and find some middle ground where we can agree to balance necessary consumption with reasonable conservation. Biodiesel is super cool, and it makes plenty of horsepower in my TorboDiesel. We should all work real hard to keep our group away from the right and the left of these politics. Cuz on the edges, the republicans and democrats are selling the political cool aid.

So, you think we have less CO2 even though we also have WAY less plants?

Really?

Care to prove that?

Also, your generalizations of who agrees and disagrees is factually inaccurate.

Will ANYONE take on my earlier, long post?

Let's talk about the science of it, huh?

There is an atmosphere on earth. I'm going to quote somebody I know:

There is a gray box, which represents the earth's surface. Specifically, a region encompassing the atmosphere, the ocean, the soil, and the top few meters of bedrock. This overlaps substantially with the biosphere but is not necessarily the same, so rather than possibly misuse the term (or some other) I'll invent my own and just keep calling it the "gray box."

The gray box contains a certain amount of heat.

There are two significant heat influxes to the gray box: solar radiation, and heat conducted and convected to the surface from the earth's interior.

There is one significant heat efflux from the gray box: radiation into space.

(There are in addition a number of other heat influxes, which I judge to be insignificant. These include kinetic energy of meteors, tidal friction, radiation from the moon and other astral bodies, and nuclear reactions occurring on or near the surface.)

Increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere decreases the rate of thermal radiation into space.

Therefore, additional heat will accumulate in the box and its temperature must increase.

"But it's more complicated than that," say the "global warming skeptics." And then proceed to describe all kinds of things going on inside the gray box. Ocean currents, water vapor, ice, plant cover, soil microbes, and so on endlessly.

And I think, no it's not more complicated than that. Heat in > heat out means temperature goes up.

If anyone wants to convince me that AGW is not a real concern warranting measures to reduce it, they must show compelling evidence of one or more of the following hypotheses:

1. That greenhouse gases are not accumulating in the atmosphere due to manmade causes.

2. That greenhouse gases do not decrease the thermal radiation efflux from the gray box.

3. That something will cause (or is causing) a decrease in heat influx (either solar radiation or heat from the earth's interior) to the gray box that balances the expected decrease in heat efflux.

4. That despite an accumulation of heat energy inside the gray box, its temperature will not rise.

5. That an increase in the temperature in the gray box is not a concern.

Number 1 appears to be contradicted by direct measurements.
Number 2 appears to be contradicted by basic rules of optics.
Number 3 requires a complete description of the mechanism, and strong evidence confirming that it exists.
Number 4 appears to be contradicted by basic laws of thermodynamics.
Number 5 requires addressing each of the obvious expected consequences of a temperature increase including melting ice, shifting climate zones, redistribution of fresh water supplies, and threats to locally adapted flora and fauna, in a quantitative way.

Number 5 is the only one that requires looking in detail inside the gray box. So, the best chance for making a convincing argument for #5 would be to work with and build upon the expertise and tools developed within the field of climatology.

The problem for most "AGW skeptics" is that they dismiss climatology in the mistaken belief that climatologists being wrong about aspects of climatology would somehow argue in favor of hypotheses 1, 2, 3, or 4. This is futile because nothing we don't know (or might be wrong about) concerning what happens inside the gray box can refute "Heat in > heat out means temperature goes up."

Abandoning the discipline of climatology leaves them with only handwaving of the "maybe the heat only heats up things whose temperature doesn't matter" or "maybe the temperature increase will be so slow that we won't notice" variety to bring to hypothesis 5.
AGAIN, you continue to hijack and sidestep.

the topic was not global warming theory, but rather:

Conspiracy, collusion in exaggerating warming data,
possibly illegal destruction of embarrassing information,
organized resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data,
private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more.

And, perhaps most reprehensibly, a long series of communications
discussing how best to squeeze dissenting scientists out of the peer review process.
In other words, to create a scientific climate in which anyone who disagrees with AGW is written off as a crank, whose views do not have a scrap of authority.

How much warming is due to the CO2? It's a GHG. Ok. But, how much of the warming of this planet is caused by CO2?
