3 months ago I had a weird crash at Spoaks here in Texas. I ended up shattering my humerus head and breaking and dislocating my opposite wrist. My first surgery to attempt to piece things back together was unsuccessful and 24 hours later I had another surgery to do a partial shoulder replacement. The recovery started off ok but plateaued and then started going downhill about a month and a half ago. I got the bad news this week that my partial replacement has failed due to bone loss where my rotator cuff attaches(greater and lesser tuberosities). My only option is to do a reverse total shoulder replacement which reverses the anatomy of the shoulder. I'm 36 so this is basically the worst case scenario for me as this is usually done for people 65+ and comes with a lot of limitations and relatively short implant life, but there really is no other option. I should be going in for the reverse surgery in the next few weeks once they rule out infection.

I realize I will never ride motocross at the level I did, but I'm curious if anyone is doing light trail riding or light mountain biking with a reverse. I know strength is much different in an anatomical vs reverse replacement so I'm interested in those that have had a reverse. In the meantime I'll be shopping for sxs's and putting my bike up for sale!

Of course I have to add the imaging. This is after the partial replacement surgery:

And this is 3 months. The tuberosities have disappeared from xray and the head has started to escape up into the joint which means the rotator cuff is likely not attached anymore:

and some pretty cool 3d imaging they did in the ER showing the extent of the damage to the humerus head:

Thanks in advance for sharing any experiences.

...OHSU and contact Robert M Orfaly md. I wish I'd thought of finding the best shoulder specialist on the west coast before trusting some two bit wanna be, in Bend(over) Oregon, who seriously failed.

sorry to hear but get a second opinion on whether or not this is the only viable option.  My wrist was beyond repair when i broke and dislocated it but they put it back together and it works fine.  Get the best of the best working on it.   Also...keep you chin up!

I have had my shoulder repaired and still deal with residual pain/ROM issues 20yrs later and it was nothing compared to what you're dealing with. Best of luck with your recovery!

oooof - man that shoulder took a hit.  My concern would be taking another shot to the same shoulder after all of the surgery and rehab.

Best of luck to you, hope to hear about a 100% recovery.

I was told here at Mayo that a reverse has a 35lb weight and force limit.  The good news is you will get function with it. I was lucky and was a candidate for a "ream and run". Less than a year later it's perfect zero pain and zero limitations.
