Except it’s proven that using both lanes as long as possible and merging using the “zipper method” right where the lane ends is the most efficient and fastest way….makes no sense to get in the one lane miles before the other one ends.  Use both lanes as long as possible and then be a mature adult and let cars merge and everyone benefits.

Totally agree on the zipper method. However it’s on the driver in the lane ending to find a safe space to merge. Speeding up and running it too deep trying to get ahead of just one or two more cars is irresponsible. You don’t speed up going into a work zone. Then they expect and/or cause the driver in the open lane to hit his brakes which creates a chain reaction of everyone else having to hit their brakes, which in turn leads to someone down the line probably getting rear ended.

I drive a truck daily as a delivery driver and I’ve seen countless times where I’ll open a gap and flash my lights to allow a car to merge over and that same car will slow down, think about it, then decline the offer and floor it because they think they can “beat” 2 or 3 more cars. It’s not a fucking race and the end of the work zone isn’t your final finishing position. They run it right up to the barricades and then create chaos for everyone behind them. If you’re in the lane ending and it’s not still a full width lane, you’ve gone too far.

I don’t disagree with that at all.

My point was that the semi driver in the video (and the point of the meme the video was responding too) was pissed that the car didn’t merge (get in line) two miles back, when they first saw the lane closing signs, so he wasn’t about to let him in for that reason (that is what I was responding to with the zipper method and utilizing both lanes of traffic as long as possible).

Who has the right of way, and common decency and maturity behind the wheel, is a different discussion.

I didn’t take it that he was suggesting the driver switch lanes 2 miles back at the first sign. I took it as “you’ve KNOWN for 2 miles now that your lane is ending.”

I’m sure there were multiple signs, 2mi ahead, 1mi ahead, 1500ft ahead, 1000ft ahead, 500ft ahead… plenty of warning to let him gauge when his lane was ending, so he could make a plan and find an opening. Yet here he was, 50ft from his lane ending doing 60mph and he expected the truck driver to stop 80,000lbs and smoke his brakes because his dumbass made a poor decision. That’s how I saw it anyway.

Ah I see…and get where you’re coming from. I interpreted it the other way.
