He's an idiot then. They are not that bad -easier than a 450 tire I tell ya that.

I have 2 Cobra 50's, 2 KTM 65's and a CRF 450 and I would rather change the little bike tires any day of the week.

Guys this is secretsize...

Yes my username gets deleted everyday for some reason.

I changed over to maxxis tires today and it was a breeze! I bought three motion pro straight tire irons and that did the trick.

I'm planning on mounting Maxxis tires and I heard the bead is a real bitch to get on!

Maxxis is the worst. If it's a Maxxis I won't touch it.
As a Mechanical Engineer I would expect you could handle the challenge. Those Maxxis tires did not give me any trouble then went on very easily. I have no idea why so many have trouble.

Do you have the rim locks loose, and the bead broke, do you have the wheel elevated so the tire isn't touching the table, and soap and water? i use little 10 inch tire irons no problem just get that wheel off the ground or atleast the part your working on. Good luck.
wound,

I soaped the bead on both sides as you said...worked bitchin!
I also went to the hardware store and purchased a 5 gallon bucket....worked bitchin!

I use the Motion Pro ones too, haven't had a problem and have changed probably 20 tires with them, maybe more. As far as Maxxis, I'm running an SI on back right now. So far so good. Didn't have an issue mounting either.

Here's the trick... Use soap and water (heavy on soap) to make the bead slippery. Helps for getting it on, and also helps set the bead when you air it up the first time.

I set the rim on an open bucket, so neither the rotor or the sprocket gets damaged.

Also, and I've seen a whole bunch of people struggle when not mounting the tire this way: Do not work against the rim lock! Start the mounting process at the rim lock. I seat about 3" on either side. From there, pick a side and work around the tire. The end goal is to have the last 1/4 of the job 90 degrees or so from the rim lock. if the rim lock's at 6 o'clock, your last bit to mount should be from 3 o'clock to 6 (saving the three inches or so I'll go past the rim lock with the initial mount).

If you do this, your tire will pop right on and you won't bend your tire irons. Putting the tire in the sun also helps alot, although I've done many changes in the winter too. The absolute worst thing you can do when mounting is have the last bit to pop on at 180 degrees from the rim lock. I watched a guy actually break the steel wire in his bead on a brand new MH3 by prying against the rim lock.

Good luck!

Pete,

Took you advice and started mounting the tire at the rim lock. Damn good advice. Thanks BRAH! As the tire was mounting I thought I need to give some thanks to those guys who responded...man the tire went on easier than ever...

Just hang around this board for a month or so and you will likely figure out what OC is saying.

Oh, and feel free to fill out your profile. We'd like to know a bit about you for our files.
