No engine vin help pleasee

This might be the dumbest first post ever.

In South Africa no VIN number on a engine is a big deal. The bike will need to go through vehicle theft clearance and if it turns out hot property then it really becomes a ball ache. 

Most likely a similar deal in your neck of the woods.

You’ll have to go to chp and they will stamp one on the engine or rivit one on the frame. I had to do that a couple yrs ago 

We bought a used PC bike from Roncada years ago and it had no VIN. Like PFitz said.  CHP looked at our paper , I believe it was a called a MSO? They had plates and attached them to the engine/frame. Back to DMV and they got us set up with a proper title 

First things first: there is never a VIN on the engine. What you need is an engine number, which is different. 

Here in CA, they require an engine number as well as the VIN. This is presumably to help deter engine theft and chop shops. Now, do you mean you cannot locate the engine number, or has it been removed? (Or is there a spot for it with no stamping?) 

If you have a title and/or an MSO, you can probably go to the CHP and get the unit inspected. They will issue an approval for the DMV to assign a new number. That's how it works for VINs, but I'm not sure about engine numbers. That's the first place I'd check, though. 

Do you have a picture of that bike? You may actually have an old race bike but the looks of those bolts…

I've changed casings in the past that are blank with No engine number. I would give the old casing with the number back to the owner and tell him to hold onto it. I do not stamp numbers, that best left for the boys at our VTC unit.

As Falcon said. The VIN is on the chassis/ frame...then you got the Engine# on the engine.

I reckon at some point the casings were changed. Doesn't look like the number was sanded off from the picture you posted. 

I can't help you as I have zero knowledge of the USA protocol in your case.

Here in South Africa I would take the bike to Vehicle Theft Clearance and make my case.  They will run the VIN (chassis number) and if it comes up clean then they will inspect the area where the Engine number should be using a chemical with a ultraviolet light for any indication of sanding off off of the original number. If they find no evidence of tampering they then issue a new number.

I'd assume you guys will have a similar deal there.
