Tomac’s Starts

I listened to an interview this week (I forgot by who) but tomac mentioned that he changed something about his starts. However, he wouldn’t divulge what it was and did not want to share any secrets.

I’ve never raced so this is a serious question. What things can be done to better your start? Do you guys think it’s bike related or technique?

Imo luck and good throttle/clutch control.

It's not all that practical to think a rider late in his career has completely re-invented his starting form and techniques. When you compare Tomac's starts on his Yamaha to Kawi, they aren't all that different even though he is earning drastically better starting positions on the Yamaha. So you start looking at other factors, and that would be the bike switch to Yamaha.

I'm a firm believer that the both the 250 & 450 Yamahas (Star/Factory Yamaha) have the best combination of forward bite and perfectly tuned ECU starting architecture in the class. They've just got things figured out right now that consistently allows their riders to be near the front heading into turn #1.

Makes sense. I was generally curious if there was some technique that he discovered this late in his career. Maybe it his the bike

Given his starts the last couple seasons it  blows my mind is how long it’s taken him to figure it out 😂

He’s back on a cable clutch which he prefers.
