How about the fact they announced Jett will be selling his donuts at each stadium in the concessions area, but teams and riders can’t sell their t-shirts unless they’re licensed and sold through the SX/Feld or MotoTees vendors?

I sure wish I could buy some merch to support my favorite riders, and especially those that are privateers. Maybe this Jettson donut deal will open the door for riders and teams being able to sell their merch in the pits and/or stadiums.

I think the funniest thing is that as much as Jett markets the donuts I can only remember him having a donut the 1st time which was 3 years ago? Has he not done it since or am I not remembering? He’s really pushed it you think he’d actually be having them a lot more, he’s on a podium every single race to promote it.

because they cut the vendors in on the deal,  just like you can buy the top guys t shirts at the races from the offical vendors,

but I agree, they should be able to sell stuff out of the pits like sprint car guys do,

But do the riders or teams see any of those sales numbers or profits from them? Moto-tees is the vendor for merch at the races. Moto-tees is also owned by MX Sports? I've seen the merch trailers at Supercross and Motocross races sell JGR Suzuki shirts 2 years after the team folded. So is there a licensing agreement still?

I understand that and have done so, but not all of these privateers keep their websites updated with current stock, or ship orders in a reasonable amount of time. Having merch at the races gives a fan the ability to purchase it on the spot and the deal is done.

It's pretty simple the rules as to why they cannot just set up a shop out the back of the pit.

Why can't I pull up a trailer and start selling burgers in the pit area?

They have a trade alley or whatever they call it. Just like at local markets and stuff. You need to pay to have a stall in the appropriate area. Otherwise shit will get out of hand. Some low life will steal some privateers merch and cash box.

10 privateers could all chip in and get a proper stall. Set up and sell there merch. Just like dbk do at cali races. And many other gear companies do.

Yeah it sucks the ama or feld will be charging them for a spot but no where can you just set up a shop and sell shit without a permit. Not even a hotdog vendor on a local street.

No idea ,  I don’t know if it’s a commission  thing or a lump sum licensing agreement either ,

Agree

with sx I doubt it’s even feld , but the stadium owners that set the regs on vendors

nationals probably not so much tho

I do wonder if even the big teams would sell enough merch to warrant hauling it across the country and paying people to sell it ,

If I was a privateer I'd cut a deal with a hotdog vendor...some thing like buy the "superdog" for $40 and get a free T-shirt...gotta hustle right?

I think the reason they don't bother is.

All other sports can only sell a $100 Jersey or a shirt to the fan.

The moto teams sell 10k bikes to fans.

Feld does not allow outside vendors of any kind.  If they would allow merch to be sold, even if they took a cut or charged the Teams to allow it, it would be extremely helpful.  Maybe not for a privateer as much (but maybe if they had decent pit presence), but how cool would it be to be able to buy an HRC shirt etc rather than the same old shirts Moto Tees has sold forever?

Best privateer at this was a few years ago, racing and getting a degree in sports medicine or soething like that in AZ, i think.

His simple shirt he sold

"Support your local Triple Digit" only a mxer or fan would understand. Still wear it!

When Weston Pieck was a privateer I bought the WP-40 shirts with the replica WD-40 can on it online, but he would have sold thousands if they were available at the races.

The t-shirt vendor that Feld uses could at least use a better material for the price you pay for them. Cheap t-shirts for $40+.

I hope we see Phil eat a donut on the podium this year.

Side note: I can’t believe there are people in this thread defending the idea that teams/riders can’t sell merch of their own at races. Insane.

I'm 99% sure dc has been on pulp before and said that they can apply for a vendors stall and then they can set up and sell.

Just like they would have for jett.

Just like dbk does.

But I believe feld and ama should just provide a couple stalls that are allocated for privateers to sell merchandise out of. And them not have to pay for the spot.

If they provide a spot for 6-8 privateers to sell out off. Those riders are already spending 500 or so each to race.

Somebody brought it up earlier and it's an interesting point I hadn't thought of when this "merch" discussion has been had before.

How are these guys going to get all this merch to the races?  T-shirts in sizes XS to XXL, maybe a couple designs....that starts to turn into a lot of boxes....these struggling privateers in vans already got them stuffed to the gills, where are 10 big boxes of t-shirts going to go?

That would be up to them, but Feld should allow it even if they charged them to do it. I think Teams like HEP, MCR, and even the factory teams are who would really benefit, and they need it too for sure.

Yes, I realize it'd be up to them.

I guess I was just kinda pointing out that it wouldn't be a super simple cash grab for all these guys like some folks think.  I travel to a lot of events for work where we give away t-shirts, sweatshirts etc.  It's a lot of logistics to move big quantities of that stuff around.  I've even heard ML mention before that a lot of the Teams are right up to the weight limit with their Semis already, so just adding a bunch of boxes and stuff may not be super simple for them either.

I'm not against racers/teams being able to sell merch at the races by any means.

1/5/2023 2:44pm

I'm not sure if its still lie this or not. But in 2007 when i went to the MXDN with Team Ireland. They were able to sell shirts and hats in the pit area, they had an EZup setup with them hanging up. And I think that teams were given a certain sized spot to setup and vend as part of the team package . They helped pay for the trip by selling stuff. Like other teams did.  And they had to ship it over from Ireland!

Maybe now with world SX giving Feld and MX sports something to worry about. Maybe they could start some type of merch program. I can see pros and cons to selling in the race pit area. And then also issues with giving away vender spots for privateers. It would be so cool if when you were in line for an autograph you could decide to purchase a hat or t shirt instead of the same old poster the give out. There has to be a way of making it work.

I think that buying the item from the rider or teams pits would be the best way to sell more product. It gives the fan the interaction with a "team member" or racer . Being able to buy it right then , would increase the number of sales over ordering online when you get home. At my shop, I sell way more of what I have in stock that people can touch, than stuff I order for them. And I would bet that is normal.

Is Feld really selling so many shirts , that it would take that much of a bite out of their profits?? They could do a pilot program one year. See how it changes the sales of Feld's shirts and then the next year offer a Permit for a fee  to recover some of those losses. I think there could be a win win if they worked it out right. I bet the overall number of shirt sales  goes way  up.  Maybe Feld provides the shirts or you check  in the number of shirts and X amount of each shirt goes to  Feld. I think that Fans are more likely to buy a shirt or hat from their favorite rider's pit area to show them support . than buying a shirt from the Moto Tee's truck. So it really could be a win for Feld, MX sports and riders/teams. It would add make a bigger overall pie.

There are multiple  merch/clothing companies working together with Youtubers to have a page selling their merch. Maybe a Feld truck that sells the riders Merch would be easier to do like others have said. It could help promote the official sponsors of the series too. Just like the promoters sell the space on the front # plate , they could sell a spot on every T shirt or hat sold in the pits. Have it be an official " Insert sponsor here"  item. maybe its a sticker that is included with each item, or a part of the shirts design. But they could sell that to somebody. Or try and sell it. Just some more random ideas off the top of my head.
