Before the Nikes, before the breathable, antimicrobial running shorts, before the personal fitness coaches, heart rate monitors, wrist-mounted GPS and subscriptions to Runner’s World, you were a runner.

And, like all children, you ran barefoot.

Now, a small but growing body of research suggests that barefoot is the way adults should run, too. So, many runners have been shucking off the high-tech trainers in favor of naked feet — or minimalist footwear like Nike Free, the Newton All-Weather Trainer and the glove-like Vibram FiveFingers.

“People have been running barefoot for millions of years and it has only been since 1972 that people have been wearing shoes with thick, synthetic heels,” said Daniel Lieberman, a professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University.

Strong evidence shows that thickly cushioned running shoes have done nothing to prevent injury in the 30-odd years since Nike founder Bill Bowerman invented them, researchers say. Some smaller, earlier studies suggest that running in shoes may increase the risk of ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis and other injuries. Runners who wear cheap running shoes have fewer injuries than those wearing expensive trainers. Meanwhile, injuries plague 20 to 80 percent of regular runners every year.

But the jury’s still out on whether going barefoot is actually an improvement.

“The running shoe right now is doing nothing for preventing injuries,” said Reed Ferber, director of the Running Injury Clinic at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Kinesiology. But, he adds, going barefoot has downsides too, and the research so far is still inconclusive. “It’s a total tradeoff.”

Chris McDougall, author of the recent book Born to Run, goes further. “If this were a drug, it would be yanked off the market,” he said of running shoes. McDougall says his own persistent problems with plantar fasciitis cleared up after he started running in Vibram FiveFingers.

I really like my Vibram five fingers, I really do, most comfortable footwear I've ever owned, like being barefoot.

As I have told dozens of people, I wouldn't wear them all day in Disney World, as you feet get tired. As for running, I think if it was like a 5K or 10K, no problem. I do know some guy ran the NYC Marathon in a pair

They look funky, but once you wear them and they mold to your foot....it is like a glove or 2nd skin

Is there something on the bottom to protect your foot from stones and such or is it just a piece of rubber?

It's a rubber sole with like a deck shoe tread.
I would not recommend walking through nails, tacks and glass in them, and occasionally a sharp rock turned just right can poke your foot a bit, but otherwise it's a shoe

I have had plantar fasciitis for years. I started to run in a pair of NB 991s (now 992s) about 5 years ago and my plantar fasciitis is all but non-existant. Every once in a while I can feel it, mostly in the morning, and I take a day off from running.

I am going to check into these. Dave, how long do they last? I run 5k every day.

I really couldn't tell you, but I can say they're well made and Vibram is a reputable company

I do suggest you measure your foot with a standard tape measure, both inch and mm, because they're sold in euro size and fit is important.

They look cool! Can I get them anywhere or do I have to special order?

I first saw them in a local sandal shop, if you have a local place that sells Vibram, try there, otherwise google "Vibram Five Fingers"

Warning, they get A LOT of attention. You notice people looking at them and you'll get a lot of questions

Want to bet?

I get so many inquiries from the ladies, young and old, ESPECIALLY at the beach or water park

I don't know if I could get past having something between my toes. If I get one of those little "sock balls" between some toes, my shoe is coming off right now.

based on Daves recommendation, I have been looking to get a pair. Then Wired ran this story. Thought I would share it.

You don't feel it.

I hate those socks because of the feeling between your toes, you don't feel it in these shoes.

The material is very thin.

You have to try them on yourself to see.

What's even better, is the more you wear them, the more they mold to your foot.

Takes time and practice to get on with all the toes in the right slot, but as they mold to your foot, they slip right on
