What do you use to catch catfish?

What is your ancient secert of catching those fother muckers? Everyone has a their own method, so I was just looking for a good one. Went fishing yesterday and the dude across for me was using marshmellows that he srayed with shrimp spray (what ever the hell that is), and he caught his limit in two hours.

Come on guys....I know some of you got some good advice!

It's how you you rig your line, not the bait..

Tie your hook up a foot and a half to two foot ABOVE your weight...That's right kids, the weight goes on the BOTTOM of the line. This way, the bait stays just off the bottom and floats there taunting the fish..

I mostly use night crawlers, but I also cut up shad.. Both are my favorite baits...Stinkbait is over-rated..

Go catch some fish..

MXant15, all you need is chicken liver. Shit works great and whats left over you can take home and fry up for yourself.--And to make it easy on yourself, try using a trot line. Set the line, go sit at the cabin, come back and pick them up. Nice and easy.

all of the above. Catfish eat the nastiest stuff. Anything that stinks, they will eat it. They are called bottom feeders for a reason.

That's how the brothers in Chicago taught me to catch carp.


For cats you should use a sliding sinker with a float on the end by the hook(that's what the other guys was using the MM for).I also leave the bail on the reel open so the cat has a chance to pick up the bait and sswim with it a bit before you set the hook. I like chicken livers that have sat in the sun for a couple days(for quantity of fish. For the real big ones the best bait is a nice lively bluegill or other large bait fish.

This one never fails. Go out and shoot a few rabbits, stick them in a gunny sack with a couple rocks and toss it in the water where you want to fish. Come back in a couple days and use any bait what you want, rig your line any way you want and you'll catch all the catfish you want.


Don't let anyone catch you tossing in the gunny sack, you might get a little fine and time in jail, but you will catch fish.

if you are fishing with a trot line, you would use a bare hook in the winter and bait in the summer, bar soap chopped into little tiny pieces or chad chopped into little tiny pieces.

if your fishing with a pole, chicken parts. livers or gizzards work fine.

if you want the big cats in the st. johns river you would bait with fresh water eals cut into 1 inch pieces and you could get either the big cats or soft shell turtles.

We used to use soap when I was a kid. I forgot the brand of soap it was but you could only use a certain brand.

Chicken Liver works the best, But like P says, I am also a bass guy. Have caught a couple of catfish on crankbaits in the delta.

Thanx for all the advice.....For the record, I do enjoy eat'n some good catfish. My trip to Memphis opened my eyes and taste budds to it.

Sounds like chicken livers has worked for more than a few of you guys. So im going to give that a shot Smile

I was using the tiny bluegills that my wife and little bro were catching.....only a few nibbles, nothing that would allow my to set the hook.

Any trout advice? Season starts in Nov.

Only ones I have had are channel cats, and they are not as mud tasting. They are just boring to catch, it is like pulling in seaweed to me. That was what I was trying to get across. I am just used to eating tuna, yellowtail and some other ocean fish. Trout is about the only freshwater fish I get that is fresh.
