Good question Larry. I found a nice parts washer cheap but didn't realize changing 10 gallons of cleaner was so damn expensive.

Mineral spirits isn't to expensive and is safer than gas and cleans pretty well.

I have tried the Oil Eater Parts washer at my shop and it works okay but not as well as the parts washer stuff which I believe is a combo of mineral spirits and something else. My local oil company that brings me the oil for my trucks changes my parts washer chemical out for $50.00 whenever I need it. It is a lot cheaper than paying a service to do it monthly. The Oil Eater brand truck wash is great stuff though. I use it on my bike. Spray on and rinse off works great. Not quite as good as S100 but way cheaper.

I get varsol solvent from the local Ace Hardware. Works great. I once used the purple power waterbased crap and all it did was rust out everything in the parts washer. Now it's just a solvent vat.................... Note to self, never use the waterbase crap in a parts washer.

I'm low tech. I have a big rubbermaid bucket 1/4 filled with diesel fuel.

Some of the purple stuff contains phosphoric acid. That's a pretty harsh cleaner. It will discolor bare aluminum and anodized parts. Get it on magnesium engine covers where the finish is worn off and it will almost start smoking. Zinc plating will take a beating from it as well.

I tried that stuff years ago not realizing what it was.

No more for me. Stuff burns the skin as well.
