When not sure about something… just ask non-moto haha. Looking to get my wife a new vehicle. Found a good deal on a Volvo XC90 in New Jersey but I live in New York. Wondering how the taxes go for an out of state purchase? Does the dealer charge my states tax… or do I pay no tax at the time of sale, but once I go to the DMV here in New York I pay for it? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

When I one time purchased a vehicle "out of state"
I had to show proof of residency in my state. The dealer charged no tax, and the state tax from my state was added when I registered the vehicle. But it was a new vehicle.

In Minnesota you pay the tax once the auto is registered in Minnesota, if you sell it out of state the new owner does the registration once they arrive in their state.

You do not pay sales tax in the state you purchase--- you pay your home state sales tax when you go to the DMV to register your vehicle. The selling dealer will issue you a "temp transit " tag (usually good for 60 days) to get you home, we charge around $125 for that, but no tax.

There ARE exceptions to that rule however--- there are some states that have an agreement that they can collect each others sales taxes and then forward the amount to the appropriate DMV-- In Pa we have such an agreement with only a couple of states. I'm not certain if NY and NJ has such an agreement, but you're selling dealer can answer that. However, I'd prefer to pay my own sales tax back in my home state if they give you the choice. I've done it 100+ times .

Friend bought a 17 2500 HD a year or two ago from Wisconsin, and was ultimately registering in NY because thats where he lived. He paid the full tax bill in NY when registering it at DMV (they issued temp plates). Same way you're describing.

Another friend recently purchased a car from a dealer out of state , and the state charged him the local state sales tax (less than NY's lovely 8%), and then he only pays the difference at the DMV. Weather that dealer issues a check to NYS on his behalf for the tax he paid there, or they see it as a credit for sales tax paid I dont know. He could show the Bill of sale to DMV provign he already paid XX percent in taxes im sure.

so I guess i've seen it both ways? Side note - your doc /title fees in PA are crazy expensive, and the notary deal is a PAIN in the arse

Thank you everyone! Just wanted to get an idea of what’s suppose to happen before I called on it. Just spoke to the dealer and put a deposit down to hold it. Making the 4 hour drive down to NJ in the morning. Appreciate the inputs!

Title fees in Pa --------- $ 58--one time fee
Encumbrance -----------$ 28--one time fee (if financed)
Pass Car registration--$ 39-- annual

Any other fee you pay in Pa (ie. DOC fees) would be whatever the dealer wants to make on the paperwork-- Ive seen as low as $ 45 (us) up to $ 398 --- so don't confuse the State's "fees" with what you may ultimately pay.

Yeah this was through a dealership I was going to purchase a new 2500 diesel from. If I remember correctly it was darn close to the 398$ you mentioned. The notary deal still creates a royal PIA. I found a barn find Mach Z down there and it was a Pain. Similar experience when picking up some old used stand ups from PA.

In any other state than CA, it's probably easy.

Here in CA, if you purchased out of state, they charge you the sales tax and reg fees. Then they refuse to register the vehicle because it isn't a CA emissions model. Then they refuse to give you your registration or sales tax back. Then they charge you with wanton destruction of the environment and arrest you with a no-knock warrant at 3AM. Nobody knows what happens next, because those people are never seen nor heard from again.
