Does anyone know if the engines in the 87 and the 88 CR250's are the same?
I am looking for the right side crank casing for my 87.....

Are you looking for the rt. crankcase half or the clutch cover/ waterpump housing? I had to do some repair work on my waterpump housing, pretty corroded. Saved it though! Crankcase halfs should be on ebay or possibly still available through the dealer. Clutch cover is not available new.

I am looking for the clutch cover/waterpump housing.
To put it in non mechanical terms, We are looking for the the big black piece that covers up all the internal stuff on the right side of the engine.

I have found a parts bike, but it is a 1988 CR250... I know that the 1986 CR250's are a different engine... but are the 87 and 88's the same? They appear to be.......

I think it's the same from 87 up to 89.

Hello All,

A friend of mine just gave me 2 1988 CR250Rs. One of them has the serial plate missing. The other says 1988. From what I can tell it is the same as the 1987 my friend has. Was their an early 1988 version that was the same as the 1987, before they switched the suspension around?

Please give me any feedback you can.
Thanks, Tom

The 86 had more of a Supercross powerband and the 87 was more suited for motocross. I loved both those bikes. The suspension on both of those were great, then they screwed the bikes up for years to come when they switched to the inverted forks in 88. I've had Honda's since 84 and I'd say the 87 250 and 02 450 are my favorites of all of them.
Hi,
I was just given 2 1988 CR250Rs.

You say they swithced to inverted forks in 88. My 88 CR has non-inverted forks. Is it an early year model or something? My 88s looks just like my friends 87.

I appreciate any feedback you might have on this.

Thanks.

They switched to inverted for the 1989 year model (so actually he was right, since the bikes were out in Sept. 88). The 250 and the 500 got the USD's, the 125 stayed conventional for 89.

So, my bike that was made in 10/87 but says 1988 as the model year, is actually the bike everyone is referring too as a 1987? The one that all these guys like? I hope so!

If the data plate says 1988, it's a 1988.

The '88 CR 250 was a letdown compared to the '86-'87 CR250's everyone loved. Power was kind of flat, forks were not as good as '87, and reliability was not a strong point.

Yeah! That's what I'm getting ready for too. My buddy is racing a 76 Maico 400 in vintage, and now I've got the bug! Good luck for the coming season.

Beautiful bike, excellent job on the restoration. I love the mid-late 80s Hondas...
