Well, unfortunately the MavTV debut was a bit rocky, to put it politely. It’s great that they put it on Facebook and YouTube and were able to salvage the day.
I paid for MavTV+ so I could watch on my PC, didn’t know about the YouTube stream so watched on Facebook but it had all the commercials and the video quality was poor.
A lot of us also had issues with Peacock but I digress.
Today the Pala race showed up in my YouTube feed and I wondered why the races aren’t streamed to YouTube all the time.
Does anyone have any idea how much it costs for production cost, crew, etc for a National?
If the Nats were streamed to YouTube and monetized, would that be enough to cover expenses? Make a profit?
After about 24 hours, the free YouTube video of Pala has 255K views so far.
I have absolutely no idea how much YouTube pays but I’ve heard about some people make a killing... but of course the amount is never revealed. Kind of how people love to tell you how much they made gambling but never say how much they lost lol. Anyway, just for example, if each “view” on a 4+ hour show with 255K views equals 25 cents, that’s $64K for one race. A commercial-free option could yield additional $.
Then the races wouldn’t be constrained by television timeframes, etc. Plus, there are likely many other advantages and areas of opportunity.
It’ll be interesting to see how many views Pala gets in the next week. It’ll give a good idea of the current interest in AMA Motocross on YouTube and I think, in time, the numbers would grow if the production is on point. Maybe it’s time to to cut the cable. Has MX Sports seriously looked into the YouTube option? If so, what was the conclusion?
Genuinely curious if it’s a viable option.

Now is it possible? Yes it is as we’ve seen. Youtube has decent data compression that lets people even with slower connections be able to watch a live stream and not have it look like shit.
Is it likely? No, because $$$.
Number of views now at 296,000
So live streaming isn't particularly expensive. That club meeting has around 150 entries paying £60ish. The club, including practise fees, isn't taking in much more than £15,000-20,000
You can add a few bells and whistles if you want (well known commentators and maybe a few more cameras) but the base cost of it could probably be covered by the entry fees alone if you wanted to go that way.
It's really the fact that there's a demand to watch motocross, and thus it's something to sell.
