I vaguely remember that pros were jumping into the whoops as far they could and then try to smooth out the rest. I remember it being a strategy from mid 90's. AM I MENTAL?

Some still do it occasionally, and sometimes it is as fast as any other way.

Not just jumping into, but also jumping through. It's still a good way to go when the whoops get chewed up.
At my local track, you were the shiz if you could triple, triple, single out of the whoops.

Depends on the whoops and the entrance to the whoops. Also depends on what is directly after the final whoop.
