I’m going to do the clubman class on Saturday, is anyone here racing? Or raced it in the past? Any tips appreciated, not expecting to go there and win just to have a go before attempting the 3 hour Sunday race maybe next year.

Raced it back in 2019 for my first time. My advice would be take an electrolyte drink or something with salts in to stop the cramps, not a lot of time to rest around such a tight beach track. As far as bike goes, steel sprockets, o-ring chains and net up the radiators.

Skegness is my home town where I grew up, I could actually pit out of my parents fron yard near the golf course.

I've lived in USA 20 years, and it's certainly on my bucket list to race it.

Off topic, but if a Yank wanted to come race one of these beach races for a Moto vacation is there any bike rental services like they have for some of the extreme races, ISDE etc. ??

Bucket list stuff for sure.

Awesome thank you, what’s the deal with the net on the rads, net over the louvres?

That's right, a pair of your wife's or mum's old tights does the trick.

I did it in 2019, never again. To be fair I was completely under prepared and hated every moment of it except for the piss up on Saturday night.

Gear your bike to prevent having to slip the clutch too much, it's not like a typical beach race with an extra long straight, it's tight, the obstacles are soft and very close together, the 1st lap in particular is horrendous, bikes and bodies all over the place.

A friend of mine and his son competed, the son wrecked his clutch on the 1st lap, on the 2nd lap his dad stopped, swapped transponders and let his son continue on his bike, a lap later he'd fucked the clutch on his dad's bike too.

I had to adjust my clutch just going to the start line and I'm not usually a heavy clutch guy, never had to put a new clutch in any of my bikes in 30 years. I was lucky, 3 laps in, going through the dunes I got rear ended at some point, about 3 corners later my silencer fell off, broke the mounting. So I parked up, went to search for my silencer and rode straight back to my van relieved.

It's a lot harder than Weston Super Mare.

Yeah a lot of people have said it’s harder than weston due to the layout. Got to be worth a go if nothing more than an experience. People seem to either do it every year without fail or do it once and think F that I’m not doing that again! 😄

I can’t help with that one I’m afraid but there must be a company able to help out, it’d be one hell of a journey to race on Skegness beach!

Its the hardest beach race there is , its slow and tortuous, and the bikes never get a chance to cool down.. smart people fit an expansion tank on the radiator, and dont bother with a big fuel tank.

The track is small and you do lots of laps, the straight is short and deep sand, on slopet hat is hard to master, there is no rest. Best bit about it is there is no water, no matter how deep you go , you never hit the water table, unlike Weston, where the water just sits on top of the sand. and any hole, is just instantly full of water.

I did comms for the first 3 or 4, years, great weekend, none of the bollocks of Weston, for half the cost.

Skeg-Vegas!

The home of the British stag do! (bachelor party to you Americans)

Never done the beach race there though, by the sounds of it it’s like Margate- that’s very dry, super soft and I’ve been told by comparison WBR is like hard pack!

What bike do you all reckon to do it on, 125 or 250?

I’d say the 250, just plan on the gearing so you don’t burn up a clutch. 125 won’t have enough grunt as it’s very soft. I did it on a 450 and geared it so I had a long second gear to get through the dunes.

Sounds good thanks, I was leaning more towards 250 as the 125 gets a bit tiring keeping on the pipe especially in deep sand. How did you get on when you raced it?

I’ve done Skegness and Weston lots of times... on sidecars... in fact I’m sat in my van in Weston Super Mare with the outfit in the back ready for the beach race this weekend... they are both tough in very different ways, Skeg is relentless there’s no where to have a rest you are either on it or stopped as soon as you shut the throttle the bike stops... it’s good fun though...

We finished all 3 hours... it was really really tough this year with the rain though.

Nice one sidecar, looks a hell of a challenge on 3 wheels! Happy faces by the look of it though that’s what it’s about 👍🏼

Well the weekend has arrived, I was going to do the Saturday 1.5 hour race but decided to just go for it and do the Sunday 3 hour race instead. Might as well just go all in! If anyone is going I’m number 102 on a Husky 250 2 stroke, probably paddling round and hanging out of my arse by hour 2.

Yeah, I don't know how fit and good of a rider you are TJ, but you might be hanging before the end if lap 1 depending on how it goes. Good luck man. I have a good friend doing the shorter race. The nutter.

Haha only one way to find out! Should be a laugh anyway, I’ll let you know how it goes.

Just spoke to my pal, he's been there all day and says that the track looks a lot tamer than when he last did it. Good luck, I hope you enjoy and manage to finish it.
