Hey all, I picked up a new to me 89 cr250 this weekend to do some vintage mx with. I am starting to go through it and my first question is about the water pump cover. I drained the coolant from the drain bolt (which looked fairly clean) and then pulled just the pump cover to see if I saw any corrosion. The pump impeller and cover looked pretty clean so my question is do I need to pull the right crank case cover to inspect more for corrosion or do you think it is ok? Is there any way to tell if the cover is the magnesium or the aluminum one? Thanks!

Some 89”s had the mag cover and they did rot. I have a low hr 89 that had the mag cover & it was rotted. Yours looks like it has been replaced or it is aluminum, which is good news. I would remove the separator plate just to inspect behind the impeller…..

Is there any way to tell for sure between the magnesium and aluminum covers?

Not sure how to determine mag from aluminum…. But… if that was a mag cover, it would be rotted ….. look inside your radiators also, when the mag rots it leaves heavy deposits inside of the entire cooling system, clogging the radiators. If all looks good, run Evans waterless coolant, even if it is mag it won’t rot with the Evans….search some mag rot photos, you will see how bad it gets….
