Arai VX pro-4 genuine question

I have been looking at getting my son a new helmet, based on whats available in the local area im deciding between the bell moto 9 flex and arai vx pro-4. I was pretty set on the bell however the arai is interesting and lots of people have great reviews on them.

The part im confused on is the Arai VX pro-4 obviously doesnt have any of the latest tech of the new helmets on the market however they claim they manage rotational impacts due to the design of the helmet shell. Im not sure if this has come up before but how can the shell manage rotatonal impacts when they have the fins screwed onto the shell? They claim the helmet is round so it doesnt get caught on the ground but yet have these fins all over it?

Maybe im missing something and thats what I would like to know as I want to make sure i buy the better helmet between the bell and arai.

Cheers

I get what you’re saying about the Arai having those plastic vents screwed all over the top/back of the helmet, they are meant to break away in a crash because they are very easy to take off, the 3 main ones on the back are basically held together by one plastic screw, and some fitment slots in the helmets shell. Arai’s whole image with their products is rounder is safer, so take what you want with that information and roll with it. They seem to be manufactured very well and I’ve never thought twice about the quality of them, but like you said they don’t really have that innovative high tech factor that other brands may have. I wore Bell Moto 9’s when I rode, and the Arai fit very similar, but first things first is make sure you buy what fits him best, no questions asked! Like I said from my experience the fit between them is very similar, but everybody’s head is different.

Thanks, i did try both on my son he as you mentioned both fit really well. If anything the Arai fit slightly better but its very marginal.

Regarding those plastic vents yes they are designed to break away but still the initial impact could hit them and then the whole round shape becomes void.. I imagine they still are going to create some force and catch on the dirt on impact vs a complete round helmet.

I like that Arai use different shell construction for each size and different eps density for each size i dont think other helmets do that.

I don’t know if you know but every Arai is handmade in Japan. Their eye for perfection is second to none. Me personally I’m a Shoei guy, again their helmets are handmade in Japan, I prefer the feel & look of a Shoei & they don’t feel claustrophobic.

The shell size is different on the bells too, i would pick the bell all day over the arai, the arai is probably the heaviest helmet on the market. Noticeably heavier than the bell if you try them both on and move your head around.

Yeah so thats why im trying to understand when people say they are the first or second best helmet on the market is that based on 2014 when they were released and not comparing the helmets of today.

I dont have any preference, i just want to make sure if the Arai is a better helmet that i know that beforehand. But i guess there is no factual evidence out there that compares 2 different helmets.

The vents are all glued I believe? And they break away with any sort of impact. Have been an Arai wearer for 25 plus years, would not wear anything else. I’m a huge believer in their smooth outer shell design. Also I personally feel there is no way you can beat their comfort and fit. But at the end of the day I think all of the “high end” helmets now days are on par with each other, just comes down to personal choice in the end.

I wore Aria for probably 20 years and
i still believe they are one of the best helmets on the market. however I quit wearing them because of the vents, I race mostly cross country type races now and the vents are very fragile. the slightest impact on the ground or with a tree branch and they break.

Arai was the first manufacturer to design its helmets for rotational impacts with the rounded shape and plastic fasteners for the visor and vents. The "newer" technologies for rotational impact create a larger shell that is more likely to catch in the event of an impact. Also, I believe that the "give" between the helmet liner and your scalp do more for rotational forces than the pods installed in the newer designs. This is just my opinion though, I have not done any extensive research or testing in that regards and I am not looking to start a debate, but there is information out there.

That being said, the Arais are on the heavy side. I switched to an Airoh for that reason since I had neck pain and it helped a lot.

Both the Bell and the Arai are excellent helmets though.

Think of it this way: you can wear a helmet which reduces rotational energy already present in the accident, or you can wear one that doesn't create the rotational energy in the first place. I'd like it even better if Arai would add the MIPS or something, but honestly, I still feel safer in a helmet which fits right, feels solid, and has nice attention to detail. I've been sorely disappointed in that aspect in all the flashy, new "top end" helmets, including the kick-ass Carbon one I now own. Sad
For instance, the chin strap on the Arai is far nicer: it's softer, thicker, and yet somehow stronger than my current helmet. Even the D-rings to fasten it are of higher quality. The liner has a much more luxurious feel. The rubber molding around the shell is softer, which I like. There are no weird pressure points, and the helmet leaves no marks on my skin. I'm pretty sure I could crash in an Arai, and if I forgot to fasten the chin strap it would stay on my head - even so, it's not difficult to put on or take off. It's things like that which I notice are missing from other helmets.

I'm going back to an Arai as soon as I can afford to get one. For me, it's not even a close decision.

Arai's marketing insults the intelligence of consumers. Nothing wrong with the round shell theory, but that doesn't mean you ignore the inside of the helmet for decades. It is possible to have both a round shell and some advanced technology inside.

Arai and Suzuki share the same R&D department.

Weight is a major concern of mine given my son is only 8. I suspect the bell moto 9 flex is a couple hundred grams lighter.

Arai ... big price, low tech. Would be the last high dollar helmet I'd buy.

6D also has different shell sizes depending on size. 6D also has game changing tech that has forced other helmet manufacturers to keep up. 6D ATR2 helmet also has the rebuild program...crash in one and can send back to determine if it needs to be rebuilt and that rebuild runs $250 which is a lot better than buying a new helmet.

I have the Arai and also recently a alpinestar sm8 to rotate them . Alpinestar considerably cheaper and better fit for the large googles like air brake and especially the Scott Prospects. I’ve had the Arai for 12 months and worn the sm8 twice both mediums. If I had to choose 1 I’d go the Sm8. Lighter , cooler and better fit for me.

Arai and Shoei are the two best helmets out there. Hand made in Japan with the best quality control. Helmet companies can come up with any kind of test to make their helmet look good, but in a real life crash there is nothing that says those helmets are any safer than an Arai or Shoei. The absolute highest class of motorcycle racing is MotoGP and you'll see more Arai and Shoei on the track than any other brand.

Please don't bring up track racing or MotoGP, it's such a bad comparison. There is a MASSIVE difference between offroad and those sports where they go over 200 mph/350kmh and land head first on asphalt.

With that said, Shoei and Arai are obviously good offroad helmets.

I’ve ridden with only Arai for the past 20 yrs and have taken some big shots. I stand by the round shell philosophy. Very thankful to be alive.

Anyone know when the other colorways for the moto-10 will be released, and will they still be the same price as the LE ?
