What is the cost of racing a 450/250 in supercross? Just a rough estimate what figures are we looking at? Not a shoestring budget. What are riders spending to compete at this level?

Travel we can leave aside for the moment.

Just a rough figure? 50k? 100k? 250k?

I am talking the actual cost. The outlay.

God that's cheap then, considering this is elite level racing.

Yeah, it you take out the cost of the bikes (need two, most likely), transportation (Van/Funmover), fuel, insurance, food, blah, blah, blah....
Then you have depreciation on all those things

All in, I do not think it is unreasonable for it to cost $100K, all in, to do SX as a privateer.

Now, you hope sponsorship covers bikes and parts and cash from other companies like gear, boots, helmets covers all the expenses

Those figures are accurate, but some of those items will also still have a value after the season is over. Be better to treat that portion as a cost of use over the season figure.

Very true.
I meant to ad that it’s starting from scratch.
And if set up as a biz most of it is tax deductible.!

The real cost is in the money and time it takes to earn your Pro Card. That puts most out of the running.

100k must be really possible as the real total expense, but to put a scale 100k is also the "budget" to race relatively competitively 1 season of the french sand championship (adding all costs, then offsetting them with sponsors, resale, etc). It is about 300k for emx from what i heard too. 300k is also the price to buy a seat in F2 for 1 season.

So it is possible to go really tight on the budget, but it adds up quickly especially when nowadays a great bikes have close to 20k in mods.

2 bikes per season for a pro ? Like 100 hours of use over 1 season or how many rebuilds do we count ? It has been a long time since I have discussed with a pro but in the 2 stroke days it was more between 5 to 12 bikes per year. Practice bikes can easily do 50 hours per month, or the double, and it is not the normal use, lots of parts get smashed and are not that safe then for a pro use after x hours of abuse. Often you didn't know it was even possible to break those parts. The strategy is often to smash the bike for 50 hours, put back the standard ignition/clutch covers, wheels, suspensions, exhaust, plastics, etc, make the bike new, then sell it as a low hours bike. Based on the rebate and financing you can get from the importer (if you are solid, otherwise it is from a shop) it doesn't cost that much on each bike and overall it costs less than big mechanicals and also in health. Some shops take care of that, fully or partially, for instance they let you use 1 to 2 bikes per season, if you need more bikes you manage it. The importer can also give you a little budget on oem parts. Some riders also manage all that through a company or association, managing it through a company is efficient regarding the vat, you lose less on the bike depreciation.

Parts, gear, oil, chain kits, brakes ; most can be negotiated for free (or 50-70% rebates). So I would say the biggest cost is to have a mechanic, fuel, get to practices tracks, insurance, of course logistics, plus the fact that you have to get to that level which is expensive.

Something really cool in the US is the purse/contingency money, both from the races and manufacturers ; in france there is nothing from the manufacturers while the bikes are actually more expensive, and the race money is somewhat worthy only in sx, even for local races they got rid of little purses that was just paying a set of tires for the winner. Also, what i told is not about me, i didn't manage to get to that level of support, I had a decent support but it is just from some talks with riders/sponsors/shops and via readings so you can take it with a grain of salt if you are looking for 100% accuracy.

300k for a season of F2? You need to add at least a million to that Smile

100k for a season of SX just seem mind blowingly cheap relative to everything else.

I can't quote (I don't know why), but 300k is accurate for a seat in f2, those are about 2010 numbers, the son was talented, one of my dad's previous business partner and the number comes from someone really close to that family. I also know well their business numbers and money is not printable Wink

ah, and i forgot tires. Tires are really expensive if you don't have support, from what i heard they could get 25 tires per season for free, but not that many had that kind of deal. I have seen "privateers" changing tires each moto, and as they were rocking 50-100 hours of practice per month, while the rear tire was lasting about the day (i have also seen 45 minutes...), it can be quite a budget.

Some friends and I were talking about running a few of the ARCA series races.. the road races. Costs per event were in the 22 to 28k range NOT including the car. Trust me that was a shoe string budget. PBnJ's for everyone !! Wink

The entire 450 SX season can easily be done for around $40K

I know people who spent 300k pear year in karting, so no one is paying 300k for a season of F2 now. Also, F2 in 2010 wasn't the Formula 2 you see now. GP2 was on the support schedule for F1 in 2010 and got given the Formula 2 name a few years ago. So when you say Formula 2 in 2010 you need to explain that Formula 2 now isn't the same thing, it's a completely different entity to what Formula 2 'was' in 2010.

Formula 2 ran from 2009 and folded in 2012. It was the FIA's attempt to bring the name back and tendered it out to Motorsport Vision. It never really gained enough traction. 300k sounds about right for that championship, but GP2 was in a different stratosphere at the time (which we now recognize as Formula 2)

it's confusing I know. That's to say there isn't equlivancy between 2009-2012 F2 and what modern F2 is.

I worked in Pro Motorsports for 15 years... there are lots of different ways to approach how you tackle costs, are you as an owner paying the riders or are they paying you? are the mechanics provided by the rider or the team? the team will need a rig (van or truck trailer). I would buy a trailer set it up the way you need it and just lease a truck truck to pull it, that way if something happens to the truck you can just swap it. you will need a tool box, and a set of spares for each bike. then travel expenses, fuel, lodging, and food. also need tents or canopy, tables, chairs, other things like that. also some sort of pit cart.

$15K for a trailer includes setting it up for what you are doing
$12K lease a truck for the season
$25K each bike (thats setting it up for racing, and spare parts)
$8K for each tool box (including all tools, spare tools, and specialty tools)

Plus opportunity cost. The 50k they could have made with a real job.
