I just bought a new Wiseco piston for my 88 CR125. The bike sat in storage from 1999 until last summer. I’ve been riding it occasionally since then, and it’s time for a cleanup bore and piston. The piston I received is much different than the 1990’s Wiseco I last put in it years ago. No milled flats at the wrist pin bore, no lightening pockets milled, just a straight cylindrical shape. It weighs 143 grams, whereas my previous one weighs 125 grams. I can’t find any good information on when they made changes, and this is the only one shown on their website. I don’t foresee there being any issue with this, besides it being significantly heavier, but looking for information or others who have run these.. any good/bad things to say. Thanks

Hmmm curious, last wiseco i bought for a 300exc has the lightening pockets and is scalloped out on the intake side of the gudgeon pin like yours. Had been running Wossners and tried a wiseco while in the middle diagnosing race bike problems, the wossner has the lightening pockets but not the scallops and is in turn a little heavier...

Yeah, I’m guessing that it’s because it’s an old bike, and not as much demand as newer bikes, that they went with only one option (the easiest/cheapest option for them) for this bike. I wish they’d stuck with the original. I’m sure it’s still a quality piston, and may even last longer, but I’m not sure how or if the extra weight will affect performance.

It is the fastest moving part in your engine and that extra inertia will for sure have some affect but whether or not you will notice it on the track? probably not. On the dyno we gained 25rpm coming from a wossner to a wiseco, now we were unsure if it was the lighter piston or because we have the right piston to bore clearance for our set up and the piston wasn't binding on the bore. The wiseco is $40 dollars dearer than the Wossner and when life expectancy of the piston is less than an hour it makes no sense to keep throwing more expensive pistons for minimal gain. I would like to confirm back to back on the dyno when we are done tho, Max RPM is what we are chasing for a very specific type of race.

That’s interesting, what exactly are you doing with that engine, that 25 rpms would be noticeable? It sounds like you’re running the piss out of it, whatever this application is! One hour of life from a piston is pretty rough. I know they’re not meant to last forever, but an hour is a short life by any standard.

Built for a beach race here in aus held once a year, big long stretched out flat track race on the wet sand at low tide, bike sits on 100% throttle for 90% of the race. Youtube search "Grasstree Beach races"

Bikes tuned for max power and top speed, gotta be able to hit 160+kmh on the straight to be competitive in our class 125 - 300cc two stroke. 4 x laps at 500m spacing between barrels and 1 x race at 750m. there are classes like any other racing split between 4 and two stroke, No rules, run what ya brung, fuels power adders etc only rule is the max cc but even then its not really enforced too much.

Awesome, I’ll check it out. Sounds like a bigger bike might be needed if you’re on a 125 against 300’s! At least in that scenario, flat out in a straight line. Sounds like a good time though

Yeah no ones rides anything less than a 250 in this class, its a great race see some wild bikes. 2019 was the first year a Road bike won the King of the beach, before that the winner 3 years in a row was on a Husaberg FE650 (670 now).

Haha yeah its a great race one of those races that keep comming back just becuase its so wild. not widely known outside of the area but it brings some heavy hitters. 100+ horsepower twin carbed Cr500's, turboed 500 husky 4 strokes. R1's in the street bike class with knobbies hitting near 200 on the straights. Wildest one although didnt live upto expectations was a 1290 superduke running on nitro, it had traction issues and was hurt later n in the day.
