IMO, reverse the pitch. Rather than leading with the charitable side, lead with the quality of the product. You customer base is too narrow to attempt the Tom's or Bombas socially aware business model. They can make it up in massive volumes, in the 10's and 100's of thousands of each design and size being sold.
Your situation, which is honorable, doesn't have the luxury of massive volume because there just isn't that many people in this niche sport.
You should make your primary marketing focus in honing down your message as a top quality product, that is offering support to those racers that need it.
It's just a simple swapping around of the message. I agree with elsewhere that your message is a little muddy and unclear what is going where. You have every right to make a reasonable profit, don't let anyone say otherwise.
One idea to consider to make this easier is first, define what a privateer is. Had this fight here years ago when WWR was around. Then, bear in mind that Ted Park's program is designed to help those guys. Another idea to take from WWR is to basically have privateer riders claim if they are or aren't a privateer in order to be eligible for funds. Things change and riders get jobs, but if you're doing the season on the road, say so by signing up in advance and being on the list (also gives time for review)
Then you pool all the proceeds and dispense equally to all on the list.
Picking and choosing who was or wasn't worthy of help was a sore spot for me with WWR.
Good luck
Again, people should buy the shirts if they like them. They get a shirt they like, and they get a bonus of knowing that they are buying from a company that supports privateers. But if the goal is to help privateers, they should bypass your shirts and give money directly.

As for our PRVTR Party Fund and who we are "funding", we are laying it out to any rider who is not on a factory team or factory-supported team. Otherwise, it's an open game. Defining a privateer over the past few years has gotten a little muddy, so we feel it doesn't need to be super specific, just as long as they are not on a top-tier team. Smaller team riders will be eligible such as SGB/Team Babbitts but teams like Smart Top/Bull Frogs spas won't be because they are factory supported. This also makes it easier for everyone because there are no sign-ups. We track it all based on AMA points throughout the season and determine who is eligible.
If our customers and fans (or even riders) feel a specific rider doesn't deserve to be eligible, we will then reach out to the rider to discuss exactly what their deal is and remove them if we feel the need to. Since we are doing our fund for the most improved rider, it still makes it a very even and level playing field for anyone to win.
With that all said, this is also a trial run. We may completely change it around when outdoors hits or we may keep it the same. Only time will tell!
Also - just as a note, we are also using Racer X and their "Privateer Profile" articles to further determine who is eligible.
However, we are creating motocross apparel meant to be different than personal/rider branded merch, so anyone who loves motocross has a lot of options. Currently, two of our four collections are PRVTR branded, but we do plan to have a lot more unique collections that are more moto-specific like the Raw and Kickstart collections once we get our branding more established. This way, your average motocross fan can buy merch they like without even knowing a privateer, yet it still helps them. And then hopefully we can help the average fan have a better understanding and respect for privateers through our way of giving back.
