Have everyone run timed qualifier laps. Randomly pick a time or average the times, have the gate drop in timed intervals so everyone gets to the end of the lap at the same time.

Why try in qualifying then? You'd only handicap yourself.

Would that get kinda crowded trying to fit 20 or 40 riders across the finish line at the same time.
