I'm definitely down with that if it was enforced. But if everyone else has one, so will I. Though when I got back into moto a few years ago I raced without one for a long time on my smoker, and started just fine.

The advantage of being tall and having long legs is huge, especially if you're on a 450. I'm 175cm with short legs and it is impossible to start a 450 without locking the forks down.

Start device levels that out somewhat. So i don't see the negative in the start device.

True but some guys I race against use starting blocks too. I have no problem with that, and I'm 5'11 and wouldn't bother with it. Should blocks be banned as well? Hard to say where the line should be drawn.

People saying they should be banned they have been around for close to 20 years, bought my first one in 2002 on a trip to USA , had it sent to a friend as Pro Circuit had them on back order, been using the works connection one recently.
Going to order the SELA when things get back to normal.
On all my sorting out in lock down did find the receipt for the first one I bought.

So with GearHeads help we got the right bolt size!
(No help from Pro Taper, they messaged me back from an Instagram comment, telling me to email Info@protaper.com but they never wrote back)

Anyways so step one: this is the bolt you need to order for Cone Valve forks:
M4 x (0.7mm) x 40mm Full Thread
I got mine from ProBolt.com. I went with Ti in black.

Next step it figuring out what hanger to use and installing the device on the fork guard.

Oh and I think a major thing is that I’m going to drill a hole in the bolt and safety wire it because if it comes loose you will lose everything instantly in the dirt.

Sucks that ProTaper didn't provide proper support for you on this (NEW!!) product. I am and will be a PT customer, but I can't help but wonder if things like this are going to be different now that Paul moved over to Renthal. Not short term but long term.

I have never gotten any answers from that email when i have had questions about their products. The only way i got an answer was going straight to Paul on social media.

I'll still stick with the EVO bar and their products because they are very good, but their customer service could be much better.

I apologize on behalf of ProTaper for the lack of customer service. Our customer service representatives are currently on furlough due to the current Covid19 pandemic and we are trying our best to get back to everyone as quick as possible. We are hoping to be back at full capacity soon and will make sure everyone is getting a response.

Thank you

Hi, When figuring what spacer, screw, receiver combo to use on this special application, simply have the ring and guard on the fork and experiment with what spacer will make the receiver nearly touch the inside of the fork guard.

I'm the design engineer for Pro Taper and I know that many personnel in the PT office were on a temp furlough when the covid 19 stuff was blowing and going. Many have returned and the rest will return very soon.

Our leadership at PT is top notch and will continue to be the best. This nutty virus stuff threw all of us for a loop, but things are back to rockin' and will continue to pump out the best in the industry.

Being that the SELA is a totally new product, we would love to hear your experiences with assembly, installation, function, and overall experience. We have logged hundreds and hundreds of cycles of testing in a variety of conditions, but we always want hear from the end customer's personal experience. So, please let us know. We are a tight knit team and can react quickly.

Thanks fellas

I just checked my email and I did get a reply from them. I’m still a little surprised that they didn’t realize it wouldn’t fit Cone Valves since when we first saw it, it was on a set of 48mm CV forks.

Surely Perebijnos' replacement wasn't on furlough (and yeah maybe his operational gaps were filled by 4 different people). This isn't a call center / email support issue. Whoever is covering for Paul (and I don't envy you) is dropping the ball.

And "The Board" isn't gonna love that you have to either recall (or support with bolts mailed out) the "single SKU" already deployed to dealerships. Somebody messed up a long time ago, sucks for the cone valve guys in the meantime.

It’s all good man, we got it dialed.

Things were crazy all over the world the last few months. We will be fine getting the new bolt from Pro Taper or sourcing online like I did.

100%. I get that we can get over a bolt, most of us work on bikes more than we ride them and can find a longer one no problem. Using furlough as an excuse for not responding to customers just grinds my gears maybe more than it should, and I barked. And then I overstepped further than I should have when I mentioned Paul, the SKU, and board. I take that back, it wasn't tasteful and I apologize for sounding like a jerk.

However, if furlough (which is something THEY do internally) is the reason why folks didn't hear back from PT, they did something wrong. I stand behind that criticism and am only posting in this thread because I'm a huge fan of their products and I hope that any feedback they get here can only help them.

And I have the SELA too and am stoked it's finally out.

Comparing a bike and rider from “back in the day” is like comparing a modern day toddler on a pw50 to a novice on a 125. Sorry Charlie, truth burns.

I received a reply from ProTaper today about fiting to 48mm Cone Valve forks:
“ The fork ring bolt that comes standard with SELA is an M4 x 0.7 x 30mm, which is not long enough for WP Cone Valve forks, as you know. We recommend sourcing a bolt that is 10 millimeters longer (M4 x 0.7 x 40mm). We plan to have these bolts available upon request as soon as we can. In the meantime, however, we ask that you check with your local hardware store or with an online seller. We apologize for the inconvenience.

As for the fork ring assembly, we recommend using the following parts for WP Cone Valve forks on a KTM or Husqvarna:
Receiver "A"
No Spacer
Screw Set "A"”

Hope this info helps! I’ll finish installing mine this weekend or next week.

Really easy install on WP cone valves with the longer bolt. I drilled and safety wire the bolt also. Work awesome!

I have one. It’s the talk of the starting gate when I roll into the pad already locked by myself.

It’s a great product. Buy one. Don’t ask a million questions. Buy one. Install it. Go to the line by yourself and it all will make sense.

@carlinojoevideo, how did you get the collar to fit around your fork? I have cone valves as well and it looks like I will have to bend the crap out of the collar to get it to fit. I am trying to avoid scratching the fork.

I just pushed mine on and it fit. If it’s clean it shouldn’t scratch it.

Is anyone able to help me with some suggestions and advice? I installed the Sela device on my bike, i used it about 10 times, then the piece that fits into the fork guard itself ripped out of the plastic, the device itself has worked great, I love the convenience of practicing starts without someone having to help, I know this isn’t an issue with the device itself, instead that the plastic isn’t strong enough. Has anyone reinforced their fork guard somehow to prevent this ? Or is there anything else I can do to stop it happening?

Your washers/bolt head on the inside of the fork guard could he catching. Use the counter sink a little so the washer will sit further inside the washer so it doesn’t catch.

Thankyou Elliot, I did countersink from the backside for the washer and bolts slightly, I was worried if I went to deep it would be to weak, but then it happened anyway!
