Hello Guys,
Newb here with some questions on a 95 xr600r. I recently picked the bike up for free from a neighbor. He was riding the bike and it quit on him about a mile from start. He checked spark and compression. He never touched it again two years since.

I get the bike, do a full carb clean check spark. Put a new coil and spark plug on. Check all electric with Ohm meter.(seems like on point) . I then get the bike to want to start but doesn’t go. It has backfired and like I said it gets that braap and nothing.

I checked cdi with a cheap china version but that made it worse.

My question is if the bike needs major repair is it worth keeping and putting money into it? Or just sell as is?

And any suggestions on ideas would be great. All mechanics I’ve called want nothing to do with it.

Thank you very much

Is it worth? Tough to say. Do you want to keep it and would it be something of use to you? There was a time when plated 600r's were the shit. Not so much anymore and their value reflects that. Still fun bikes and in SoCal as a desert dual sport I could see it being of value to you if that was something you were interested in doing on a budget.

You might also consider asking this over Thumpertalk as there are still quite a few of us older guys that owned or still own them.

I don't have any experience with Chinese knock off CDI's. Only the OEM ones which can have a tendency to go bad, and unfortunately kinda randomly making them tough to test when the circuitry gets loose inside the sealed box. I know Rocky Mtn ATV carries an aftermarket CDI unit for the 600r still and may be of better quality than some random Chinese one off ebay unit. Best way I know to tackle a potentially bad cdi without throwing money at it is to do just what you are doing, eliminating everything else first.

Compression test, leak down test, adjust valves, ensure decomp assembled correctly, clean carb, verify timing, check coil, plug wire, pulse generator etc, visual spark. It will also give you an idea of the general condition of the motor.. if low compression or roached head.... might not be worth it to you. But if everything else checks out, be worth it to spend $25 at Rocky Mtn for their aftermarket CDI.

And lastly, depending on your experience with big air cooled thumpers... there can be a bit of a "art" to starting them. Everyone has there own process, this is mine when cold and sitting for some time. Turn the idle up a couple of turns, kick through using manual decompression for 15 or so full strokes. Add full choke and dont touch the throttle, kick to to TDC, then a hair past, and full long strong and fast kick. Not a stab like you do on modern bikes or two strokes. Seen plenty of guys new to big thumpers swear their bike wouldnt start and were broken, only to start in one or two proper kicks with a good technique.

Good luck!
