If you read his interview, even Chad gives props to RV about his outdoor riding. I am the first to admit my bias for Villopoto, but it is a bias built on watching him do some pretty damn amazing things, a lot of them in person.

I really, really don't get you guys who talk like Villopoto is some kind of unknown quantity outdoors. Can you supply any valid reason why you would do that?

1. Has never lost an outdoor title.
2. Has won 3 MXDN titles including beating ALL the best 450s in the world on a 250f.
3. Posted the fastest lap times of any rider at several Nationals last year--on a 250.
4. Won 19 of 24 motos last year with 4 of the 5 losses coming after he had the title.
5. Won 2 of the last 3 supercrosses this year with lap times very close to CR and JS in his "rookie" year. Who knows what he would have done had he not been sick?
6. Isn't even 21 years old yet and is only getting stronger.

If that isn't enough to convince someone that he is the favorite, then there probably could never be enough. I'm just glad that all this speculation will end when the combat begins in 4 days.

Ryan is most definitely on a roll, pilotdude, but he's not invincible. The other Ryan, Dungey, beat him, Townley beat him a bunch of times, and Reed owned him all year, but for a few moments. Different discipline? If you will, but when it comes to sheer bike handling prowess, I give Reed the nod over Villopoto's superlative skills.

Okay, maybe not "in a walk"... ! :0

Interesting stats

MA gate pick lap time was 4 seconds faster than RV at Glen Helen last year. 2.37 - 2.41

Fastest lap for both in Moto 1 was about the same 2.43

Fastest lap in moto was RV 2.42 MA 2.44

Different bikes, different year, yada yada. Point is they are pretty close when it comes to speed.

Gonna be a great season

Sounds a lot like bubba to me, and we saw how that turned out his 1st couple seasons outdoors on a big bike.

As much as I used to hate the guy, I am really pulling for 800. Theres no supercross whoops in the nationals (which as we all know is his downfall indoors) and he was easily the 2nd fastest rider last year outdoors. I hope he absolutly smokes Cryan Ryan.

God damn.....you guys ALL speculate to damn much! I'm with GuyB on this one......lets just watch the race and see where the dice fall. I have a good feeling who will be strong and who won't.....but i wouldn't bet on anything just yet.

Another good point GuyB brought up......"they have to make it through all 24 friggin' motos!"....no matter how fast they are!

One thing is for sure.....there is going to be some great racing in BOTH classes!

That much we can at least all agree on i hope!
......"they have to make it through all 24 friggin' motos!"....
That will be the deciding factor without a doubt.
If Reed uses the same strategy as SX of be consistent and dont kill yourself in ..It could work out well.

I'm sorry, but if anybody is heading to GH with a pocket full of confidence it is Mike Alessi. With JS7 not confirmed MA should be the favorite, He smoked everybody else last year consistantly and should have no problem doing it again, he gets great starts and doesn't fade to the back like he does in SX. RV and Reed will be fast and close by ,but I think MA WILL hold it on longer and wick it up faster outdoors where he is way more comfortable.

GH O/A
1. MA
2. CR
3. RV

To be run over by 20 guys......You have to be in front of 20 guys.

RV can win this title.

notice the intensity of RV in his practicing!! The dude was all business.

Chad, on the other hand, looked like he was out on a friggin' trail ride.

Reed is the favorite but by no means will it be a cakewalk.
RV, MA, and Short will be right there every week.
Some day Shorty is going to get tired of loosing and turn it on.

you're going off the practice video on racerx?

reed just got off a 15 hour flight and went straight to the track.

other journalists have stated he looks very fast and smooth.

just sayin, to go off a video of practice makes no sense.

That is a reasonable example on which to base your opinion. I do think supercross and the outdoors differ considerably, hence the whole "supercross only" thing. Heat, length of motos, etc. Also, based on what I've seen, Villopoto's and Reeds strengths and preferences seem to be the opposite of one another. Reed LOVES supercross but is also an excellent outdoor rider. Villopoto LOVES the outdoors but is also an excellent supercross rider. Since we are going to Villopoto's preferred enviroment and out of Reed's, I give the edge to Villopoto. I have to say that Alessi will also probably do extremely well. He was the one rider to push Stewart last year, and I think he is hungry this year. And as almost everyone has pointed out, there are no supercross-style whoops in the outdoors, which is his greatest weakness indoors.

One possible advantage Reed has is Villopoto's fairly recent switch to the 450, but that is now starting to be a non-issue, given Villopoto's end of season success in supercross, and his now considerable time on the big bike.

I think guys who are known for their top-notch supercross skills get that rep because they're able to place the bike precisely where they want to, lap after lap after lap. Stewart's ability to scrub off just enough speed to land exactly at the top of the backside of a double gives him that much more ground to accelerate down the backside and shave more tenths off of his lap time.

Reed, of course, has similar skills, and those skills translate well to the great outdoors. Again, I'm not saying Villopoto doesn't have considerable skill (and talent and drive and support, etc etc), but I think Reed has a decided edge over the other racers.

Now, if Jason Lawrence can get into Reed's head, all bets are off, lol!

RV

I'm not betting against RV because he's never lost a title.

Would you really bet against Ryan Villapoto?

The other thought I had bouncing around in my mostly empty head is this.
Has Reed ever really concentrated on the outdoor title?
His whole reason for coming to the states was SX and the outdoor stuff was more of an obligation or necessity.
If he focuses on the outdoor like he has SX we will see a different Chad Reed in MX than we have seen before.

Don't get me wrong, RV and company will certainly make it fun to watch, but Speedy Reedy is on a mission to get the title so long denied.

I just got back from Glen Helen, and despite Ryan Villopoto going 1-1, I'm sticking with my story: Reed wins the title. BUT, I will admit it won't be easy. Laughing

it will take a bunch of really bad starts and some DNFs on RVs part for that to happen.....Smile
