HI guys,
Hope everyone had a killer Thanksgiving!
Wanted to share a project I completed on a personal bike that might be fun for others to try.
It's about $1000 job after graphics and such, roughly.
Bike shown is a 2017 KTM 250SX. I have never loved a bike so much, and as such- it's stuck around instead of being sold like most of us do every few years. I decided to give this a shot & it came out great.
A few notes for those interested in trying the mod:
***The 2016 250 two stroke is the only KTM that wasn't updated in the body department like the rest of the KTM lineup. So, all 2016 two stroke models (except the 250SX) can pull this off too.
***I haven't done this on a 4 stroke. Not verified that it will work in the same fashion, though I'm sure it can be done/ has been done somewhere.
Using the bike afterwords:
I've logged a few rides on it now & everything has been just great under load, and regular MX track conditions.
Aside from looks & saving a ton of $ over a new bike purchase, the bike handles much better with the newer tank and shrouds as well.
I didn't expect it, but was really happy to find out it was the case.
It's easier to get your leg up and on top of the bodywork than the older bodywork. I never had any issues with the old bodywork either & actually really love the styling of the older stuff too.
Despite the fact that the older & newer body styles don't look insanely different, they are 100 % unalike.
Every piece of the new body has some sort of interlocking or overlaying fit with it's neighboring piece. It's really, really nice. Once you take both versions apart you really start to appreciate the newer body & the way it was engineered.

No sir, I kept the stock units to see "how far up" they were compared to the natural layout of the new shrouds.
(Other readers: CJV is referring to the 12mm drop of the 2019 radiators VS the stock 16-18's)
They flexed into place easily, and I used some heat to get the bolt holes to align perfectly over the threaded holes in the radiator braces.
The shrouds have the same center-to-center measurement but have a bit more material in the way when trying to push the shroud inwards the frame to catch the mount holes. The heat helped it "mold" into place and it fits like OEM now.
I think the actual crossover tube in the newer frame is lower too, so I was hesitant to ordering more parts / wanted to see how affordably I could get it done. Rads may actually be same part number, I don't remember checking that actually.
