My 9 y/o is currently racing a 65 SX and at times I let him run his 65 in the 85 class.

I am gonna buy him a 85 and was curious of opinions on which one is the best?

In general, easiest for a beginner to ride is the KX85. Fastest potential is the YZ85, at least of the Japanese bikes. But it is very peaky and more of an all-top-end bike since it has no power valve. So to go fast on a YZ85 requires a bit more rider skill. Many think the 85SX is fastest, but it's hard to judge since so few ride them.

The CR and RM fall in the middle, which might or might not make them the best for your kid. Nonetheless, they all can be ridden to win.

seems like to me if a kid is adept at riding a 65 on the pipe than a 85 should be easy.

am I right?

Honda wins almost all the 85 races around here.

The KX and RM 85's both use a powervalve and are easier for riders that are just moving up. The CR and YZ are faster under more experienced riders.

Agreed, but they stopped making Honda CR 85's in 2007 (but they did rip and were the easiest on your wallet).

If the kid can keep the 65 in the powerband all the way around the track and regularly hassles big bike riders while on his 65, yes, he will be fast on an 85.

Maybe a "big wheel" 85 if you are a beginner, but once you have more experience you will want something bigger. 125 2 stroke?

KTM 85 sx is by far the fastest.
The only problem is they are grossly overpriced.

And grossly unreliable, and parts are harder to find, and most cities don't have a KTM dealer, and parts are expensive..........
