Alpinestar Tech 10 vs Tech 7

For the 600.00 price tag on the tech 10 is it really that much better than the tech 7? And does anybody have recommendation for a top of the line race boot that will last for a decent amount of time.

I used tech 8s and 10s for years then one day I used my friends tech 7s because I had forgotten mine. I couldn’t believe how much better they fit and was way more comfortable. I’ve been using them ever since. I believe Josh Hill preferred them too.

Check out usedmxboots.com
You get basically new Sidi Crossfire 3s for under 350$ (Best boots out there IMO).
They also have some Tech10s

Tech 7 = best value boot IMO. Especially if you get them on some kind of closeout or holiday sale

I've heard Matthes say some pro riders actually prefer wearing Tech 7's for outdoors over the Tech 10's (I assume these are riders who don't just get free boots handed to them - but still)

If you want the best boot that will also last the longest.....SIDI or Gaerne.

Been wearing Gaerne since they said JT on the front of them. First pair were red and said "Mikola" on the front.... (1979).
Throughout the years they have always protected me, and my son. Best ever, will never buy anything else.

When you factor in price the Tech 7 is the best boot out there. I couldn't keep track of how many people wear them at my local races. I used them for 2 years until I bought SG12's. I would recommend them to anyone!

Did not know they made them for JT. That's before my time.

Yep. Even the buckles had Gaerne on them. Had to ask my Dad what that word was, I was 5......
But, throughout the 80's they made JT boots. Even the pink ones....... Those were Mom's favs.

I lived through this exact scenario. If you’re looking for comfort and price the tech 7 is the way to go. If you’re looking for protection first with good comfort you can’t go wrong with the tech 10. I had 3 sets of 10’s without issue with several OJ’s and cases. Bought the 7’s purely based on comfort/price but one decent underjump in them injured both ankles and then another re-injury shortly after. I switched back to a good used set of tech 10’s and haven’t had another issue. The hinge/flexion stop system works very well in my opinion. Im a decently fast 30+ rider so protection is everything to me. Find a lightly used pair for $300 or less.

It depends on what you want from the boots. The Tech 10 is the way to go if you want maximum protection. The drawback with that is the stiffness of the boot, some people doesn't like that. The Tech 7 is lighter and more nimble but doesn't have the same amount of support/protection.

I have no problems with a stiff boot, i actually prefer that feel so i use the Tech 10.

Edit: I somehow forgot the latest gen Tech 10. It is actually quite a bit lighter than the old one (also a bit stiffer). The difference in weight between the current Tech 10 and Tech 7 isn't actually that big anymore. If ytou ask me, the current Tech 10 is the best boot out there.

The only issue I can say about the Tech 7 is the buckles. They are a bit difficult to snap on.

Some top enduro guys run the tech 7 rather than tech 10 due to increased feel. This is more in extreme enduro events

I used to only use the Tech 10s when I raced, now I am on my third pair of Tech 7s and love them. I would recommend the 7s for better value and feel. They are light, still good protection, and look pretty good too.

I love the tech 7's, great price, good fit and no break in time. One gripe I have is I seem to go through the sole on the left boot pretty quickly.

Anyone have any experience getting boots re-soled with alpinestars?

I have a lot of time in both boots. Like mentioned, the 7 is super comfortable and has great feel. To me though the Tech 10 is like insurance for your feet. If you always downside jumps perfectly and never make a mistake then the 7 is fine. For us mortals though the 10 is amazing when you face a jump, oj, etc. The old version of the 10’s were definitely a bit heavy and bulky feeling but the new ones really weigh barely more than the 7’s and feel much slimmer. I think mine are holding up better than my old 10’s as well. I’ve had them for 8 months and people still ask me if I got new boots every race.

It’s a very fast turnaround. I’ve had it done a few times and I want to say it was maybe 2 days turnaround once they got them.

Really like the Tech 7, but I'm almost half way through the sole in 5 rides. Won't buy again.

What are some good places to get a hold of some used tech 10s to try?

I've had the latest gen SG12's, also the tech7 and now the new gen tech10. I prefer the tech10 myself. The SG12's are a great boot, but pretty heavy. The tech7's are light, but the bottom buckle bruised my foot because the boot doesn't have any hinge.

I’ve worn Tech 10s exclusively for the last 5 years or so...until very recently grabbing a pair of TLD Tech 7s that were a color-way that I really liked.

The 7s are lighter/simpler.
They’re easier to clean, too (no booties).

The 10s stay “newer looking” a little longer.
Some people have reported that the soles last longer on 10s, too.
The 10s seem better for hard rain/very wet conditions.

Value-wise I’m thinking they’re equal: 10s can last twice as long based on what I’m hearing from very reliable people that ride a lot.
