I wish there was a newb section so I could ask this question.

I am about to buy my first PERSONAL bike. I have ridden a few dirt bikes and have two sport bikes. I am trying to decide between a 250 or 450 but only want a four stroke. I am confident on a sport bike and ride pretty aggressive. I know ill be the same when it comes to MX. Go big or go home. My friend that races is all for the 450 and I am definitely leaning towards that because I know ill get use to it quickly. About me:

22 y/o
185 lbs/6'0
I live down the street from a MX track and it also has 15 acres of trails. I'll mainly be on the track because I would like to start racing but ill do the occasional trails with my wife. In the end, my goal is to get into a few races by mid fall to winter.

The races are open to 250s and 450s against each other so I want to be able to keep up. I know its all about the rider but thats just another factor on my mind. Whatcha think?

FOR THE WIFE

This will be her first bike and she is a little extreme women too. Shes ridden quads a good amount of times but only a few times on a dirt bike. I want to either get her a 150 or 230 dirt bike. She will be out on the track a lot with me but with a totally different mind set and I know she wont get crazy but she can definitely pick up things fast and handle her own. She wants to race too but on a lower level. She weighs about 120 and is 5'7/5'8. I was thinking about getting her a bike with an electric start so she doesn't get frustrated on hard days and she can just push a button. Also factoring that the 150 weighs about 70 pounds less but I want her to feel content with the power. Help and thanks in advance!

A matter of taste, but RV smoked the field on a 250F, and I have seen very few people in my life that really needs a 450. If you are a noob, I would suggest a 250F. It's lighter, has enough power that wont tear your arm off late in a moto. That also means lesser force needed from body to ride = longer time on bike, or more safe riding.

That's what I was thinking but I just didn't want to be disgruntled when I get "use" to the power. Point taken though and I appreciate it

If I were you, i would just go w/ a 450, easier to ride and less maintenance. You say your wife is 5'7 5'8ish and 120, i would really need to see a picture to give you an honest opinion on which bike would be right for her.

I did hear about the bullet proof side of the 450. What would make it easier to ride?

You know, I've always been a 450 rider and have definitely enjoyed having the extra power on tap. Especially for my (sometimes lazy) riding style! I always thought that since I was a bigger guy that I would have to get a bigger bike.
Well I did. And I adapted well- But Recently I had to sell my bike due to money issues, and in the mean time ive been borrowing my roomates crf 250r.... Well, man i think that Im just as fast if not faster on most tracks that I go to ( here is Socal ) . And I tell you what, I have a ton of fun on the 250f!! The bike is lighter, just as fast, and you can really throw it around! I love it cuz it reminds me of my 2 stroke days!
I'll be honest, most guys I see at the track dont even have any business being on a 450 anyways... Its a whole lot of power and ends up taking you for a ride vs the other way around.. Overall, its all preference. Riding Area, Syle, and what your goals are.
For me now that Im shopping for a bike again, Im looking at the 250's along w the 450's !
Hope this helps

I would love to dyno RV2's PC 250F. I bet it is closer to a 450 in HP then a stock 250F

Aaahhh man. I think I am gonna stick with a 450

I found a 2007 KX450F for $3300 because the guy is hurting for money. Its actually at the shop right now getting checkout out.

250 will be way easier on a beginner rider. but a 450 will last longer.
if you are just an average rider that wants to hit the trails and mx track every now and again, a 250 will be fine for you tho. proper maintance is key. it seems to be the faster riders that thrash out 250fs left and right. id be reaallly cautious about buying a used 250.

Exactly. With a boobie picture, we could definitely recommend the correct bike for her...

Haha when I get the bike for her you'll get some pictures. I am going with a 450 for me and 150 for her.

Well, since you live in Raeford, NC. I would say get a 250f and then use the money you saved from not buying the 450 to go Skydiving.

Yes, prolly pretty brutal that bike. Maybe the day we ride as fast as RV, we could need those extra ponies as well! Smile

Most of my friends have 450's. They rarely if ever get out of 3rd gear on our tracks here.

When they ride a buddies 250F, they have "way more fun" on the 250F. They kick themselves, but still keep the 450 because it's the "manly" bike to have. Silly if you ask me. FUN 1st!

Which is why I'm a 2 stroke guy. Nothing beats FUN like a 2006+ YZ250. NOTHING!

You'll learn to be a better rider on a 250.

You'll love the 250f. Start with that and then you can bump to a 450 later. 250f is a blast to ride. If your doing some trail riding and you want the wife to ride then I would say a 250f in my opinion. I love my 450 though and it would be tough for me to go back to a 250f but damn it was fun when I had it.
