Hi Brian. Sure is, I've been busy with it but haven't had much time to update the thread,
I bought a 93 cr500 and couldn't resist having a play so that's held things up too.

I wouldn't recommend powder coating a rear swingarm, looks great but chips sooo easily.

So, every bearing and seal replaced on the bike, new brakes, suspension rebuilt.
New old stock cables, grips, levers ect
New chain and sprockets, sliders.

Looks really good. Thanks for the update!!! Are OEM tanks still available? I just got a 1986 yz125.
I had to clean it up a good deal to get to this point. It runs great and has over 150lbs of compression.

Nos tanks are like hens teeth to find, I bought an after market tank from Clarke, slightly expensive if you live in the UK with the shipping costs and customs charges.
These bikes seem to be getting harder to find in reasonable condition, a few years back we could pick up a nice condition, looked after bike for £800 and there were loads around, now they are few and far between, yours looks nice and original, worth keeping that way imo.

Sweet bike, I love the bikes from this era, best looking by far in my opinion.
The most common bikes become the rarest eventually.
Here's a pic of an 88 yz125 I restored a couple of years back

Great looking bike. Do you still have it? They are great looking bikes. I think the one I have is all original. I plan on doing more to it. I need some decals next. I have a new seat cover that should go on tomorrow.

I will get decals next and paint the exhaust pipe. My brother has a downer coating kit. We will probably buy a small oven for the garage. Then we can powder coat some of the smaller parts. A few days we replaced the Kickstarter shaft. It had a bit and an easy out snapped off in it and rusted in place. We also replace the crankshaft main drive seal, Kickstarter seal, crankcase gasket, and power valve gasket while we were in there.

On my 1986 yz125 the cylinder does not appear to be painted.

It may have been stripped back when someone has removed it for a rebore, I'm sure they were painted satin black from the factory.
Easier to replace the Kickstarter shaft if there's half an easy out stuck in it, hi carbon steel is a swine to drill or grind out.
Good idea to check the input/output/crank/water pump bearings for play while the clutch cover is off.
Looks clean in there which is a good sign.

Was the swing arm originally painted silver when the bike was new? I noticed the swing arm on my brother’s KDX was painted.

I think they were bare aluminium on the yz's, they may have had a clear coat laquer on them.

Yes, I painted the exhaust with high temp black paint but when it dried it was Matt, almost powdery looking so I went over it with standard satin rattle can black, I let it cure for a couple of weeks before I fired it up, it handles the heat fine.
Propp2531 s tank might be well worth looking into if you're going down that route, could be a good deal to be had for both parties!
Both tanks I have on my two yz's are Clarke tanks.

New old stock intake boot, all new gaskets.




Kick start stripped, checked, New spring and ball bearing fitted, greased ( also have a nos rubber boot to go over it.




New panels, seat cover and graphics

Hi. Mudguards, number boards are ufo , seat cover came with the bike when I picked it up.
The red rad covers came from cmsl in the Netherlands.

Brian no updates as yet mate, bike had to go into storage for a few months due to work and family commitments but it will be back in a few weeks

you know the size of your cylinder bore i got a yamaha 1985 yz 125 its got a bore size of 57.15 to 18 and top of piston says 1.25 wondring if thats the same piston i need
